Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

In terms of the vintage tobacco offerings, things were kinda dead on ebay surrounding the holidays. Recently the action has started to heat up again and I have been keeping an eye on whats been going on.

A decent number of vintage Dunhill Tins went earlier today (the oldest stuff getting $50 a tin!) with a couple discontinued Pease Blends. A large number of 100g McClelland auctions are slated to expire in the next hour or 2. In the next 2 days there is a wide offering of odds and ends. Everything ending tonight looks a little too rich for my blood but I dunno, it's fun to watch and see... perhaps I can snipe something interesting in the next couple days.

Anyone else following this or taking part?

Re: Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

to be blunt, i'm a bit pissed off about them right now. so are a few other members here.

there were a number of them i was watching with the intent to win, not just place a "shot in the dark" type bid on.

i checked them last night, they were all still within my range, checked this morning and ALLLLLLLL of them were gone from the site!!?? kept checking my search words, decided to check my ebay page, showed they all "ended" with zero bids.

sent the seller an email - he said he had to pull them for some reason... i need to read the email again, but i was a bit pissed.

there were 4 i was really after.... (none were mccletchup blends, you all can have those)

I saw 5 50g sealed puches of BS for 200. Wouldn't the tobacco still dry out quite a bit over the years due to being in a pouch.

Thanks! I'll take all the McClellands I can get!

But are people still allowed to sell tobacco on Ebay? Thought I heard that was being "outlawed".

Re: Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

Cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco or coupons for such items are not permitted on eBay.com. eBay will, however, continue to be a forum for the sale of tobacco-related collectibles, (including tobacco related memorabilia and packaging) provided sellers comply with the above policy. These items are not subject to the same legal constraints. Prior to listing any tobacco-related items on eBay, sellers should read the ‘Additional Information’ sections to learn more about what tobacco-related items are not permitted.

Selling Tobacco Internationally on eBay: Please be aware that the above policies apply only to items for sale on the U.S. eBay site (eBay.com). These policies have been implemented due to the complexities of United States federal, state, and local laws. eBay may permit sales of tobacco on international sites to the extent appropriate under local laws. Please consult the rules of each site to determine what is allowed on that site.
Selling Tobacco Collectibles on eBay: There may be instances where the particular collectible tobacco package is unopened and still contains tobacco. These sales of collectible tobacco items will be permitted as long as each of the following are met and addressed in the listing:
  • The value of the item is in the collectible packaging, not in the tobacco itself.
  • The listing description should state that the package has not been opened, but that the tobacco within is not for consumption.
  • The collectible tobacco packaging must not be available at any retail outlet, and packaging must have a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of that tobacco product in the package.
  • Sellers must take steps to ensure that the buyer of these collectibles is at least 18 years of age.
  • Buyers and sellers are responsible for ensuring that any transaction involving tobacco complies with all applicable laws and shipping regulations in carrying out the transaction.

Re: Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

these were all collectibles, if you read the definition. no, i'm not going to tell you what i was looking at, either.
none of the tins i was going to bid on are made anymore, haven't been for about a decade+.

as many times as i've bitched about certain ebay sellers trying to scam ppl on bogus descriptions of currently available/produced tobaccos, i think i've got the entire "the contents are not for consumption, you are bidding on the collectible container" down.

Re: Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

I know that a guy named Pipestud was essentially kicked off Ebay and forced to make his own website. I think it had to do more with P__P__ not allowing their services for the payments of tobaccos.

This is his new site, with quite a few vintage tobaccos.

Pipestud's site

Re: Some interesting Ebay auctions going on (Tobacco)

he would be one that would purposefully attempt to deceive buyers on Ebay... which is probably why they sent him packing.
at least he's selling tobacco still, there NEEDS to be a place to buy vintage tobacco, since that 'swiss' site doesn't really have much (or is it even up anymore). only issue i had was that he would purposefully put the wrong info up there (with the intent to drive the prices higher on some of the tins he was selling - making them look rare/vintage).

I actually know Pipestud pretty well, and knowing the story behind his having to leave Ebay, it had nothing to do with him deceiving buyers on Ebay.

I was always skeptical of that swiss site even though they had some interesting items on there. Has anyone actually order anything off of there sucessfully? Last I checked the page was down.

My dealings with Pipestud have left me to believe he is nothing short of a class act. All the tobacco listings I've seen of his had commanded higher prices on ebay, but I think that's mainly due to his notoriety as a seller.

tim, i don't mean to say that his "misrepresentation" of items he sold was the reason they stopped him from selling. i don't know why. as i stated, glad he started up his site (also glad that the prices are set so the astronomical crazyness of the prices of his tobacco auctions stops). BUT, he did publicly state that he INTENTIONALLY misrepresented tobacco tins and although it was pointed out publicly on another highly trafficed pipe forum that is heavily overmoderated, he said he would NOT change it. then the topic was closed and removed, of course, thanks again, SF.
so, having met him only once myself, and emailed with him a few times over auctions of his i've won... is he a bad guy? nah. BUT, i guess i have an issue with ppl who knowingly misrepresent what they are selling to "brothers of briar" to get an extra buck. could he be doing it for the consigners? probably so. does it make it right in some ppls eyes? not mine.
did he do it ALL the time? nope.

selling a tin of Haddos Delight and openly stating that "haddos delight" was out of production... well, that's . he was called on it, didn't deny it and said he wasn't going to change it. there were numerous others, but they were a while ago and i stopped caring to remember.

not trying to start an arguement about it.

it did confuse me that he could have an auction for 5 tins of something, have it sell for $220, while i snag the exact same thing (actually 6 tins) for $90 w/ shipping. same 5 tins, one of his auctions, just a couple months prior went for $60 for those 5 tins. the only reason i ended up paying $90 was cuz my wife mistakenly bid me up.

edit: he also banned a number of older members here from bidding on his auctions for no valid reason, other than they questioned why he was misrepresenting certain items, while admitting he was doing it. as a seller, he had that right to ban buyers from his auctions - but the reasoning was pretty damn lame (actually, he didn't give a reason, i guess he didn't like being called out).
