Re: Is anyone stocking up becuase of SCHIP?

I started amassing a 10-year supply of cigars when SCHIP was first introduced last year. I have several reasons...
  1. I've wanted a big ol' stash of aged premium cigars for way too long.
  2. I believe we're in a Cigar Renaissance at the moment. What better time to collect?
  3. We're starting another 40-year hurricane cycle. In about three years, the crop damage from the 2008 storms may affect supply. Who knows how much damage future storms will cause? Better safe than sorry.
  4. I strongly disagree with the basic premise of the SCHIP legislation. Yet-Another-Entitlement-Program mentality offends me deeply and I will fund it little as possible.
  5. Although the tax is only 40 cents per cigar now, it will be at least $1 per cigar by 2012. You think Opus X are expensive? Ha! A 150% per cigar tax will be here sooner than anyone thinks. Taxes NEVER decrease.

Amen Brother. It will only get worse over the next four years. Nothing more perminate than a temporary tax.

Re: Is anyone stocking up becuase of SCHIP?

Can't say that I have been. I have bought a few more cigars lately, but mostly because my interest has been reinvigorated, and when the weather plummets, I channel my "cigar energy" into finding the good bargains.

I don't think the price increases will affect my buying habits too much. I don't like it, but it is what it is.

Well that sounds less like SCHIP and more like bs to me seeing how the tax increase isn't even in effect yet. An increase of 2.5% I can live with but assuming the price on a C&D tin was 7.50 before 9.10 represents a 17% increase. Where is that increase coming from??

It's coming from the tobacco companies, because they know they can pull it off.

I've purchased hundreds of cigars in the last couple months. But a 10 year supply? Wow, I don't know where I'd store them all!
I completely agree with you regarding this tax. Anyone remember what caused the Boston Tea Party? Do they teach that in schools now? Anyway, it is simply, fundamentally wrong to demonize and tax one segment of the population because that population enjoys a LEGAL product you don't like. And to use the excuse of "the kids" is nauseating! Watch closely, you will see more and more of our freedoms disappearing for the "greater good". And the pathetic part of it is that WE are electing these fools and letting them tell us what's good for us and what to smoke, drive, eat, where to live, how to heat our houses, etc, etc. It won't end until we are leading very small but safe lives with little risk and almost no chance for reward. (Steps down from soapbox).

Ah. It was briefly on the main page where the latest posts
are displayed and I didn't look at the origin.

Just substitute "tobacco" for "cigar" and it fits perfectly.

Re: Is anyone stocking up becuase of SCHIP?

A communist society wants us to have our vices so we can still believe we are free. Take away our beer, our tobacco our gasoline and every firearm bough in the last 150 years will come out of the closet and set the country alight Taxes are my patriotic duty and so I will pay them perhaps with a grumble, until the day I lose all hope and choose to protest by quitting my low-end job and taking up residence in a dumpster in the upper crust neighborhoods of Amero-nomenklatura.

Quit smoking, pay the taxes.............hmmm. No contest tovarishch

Re: Is anyone stocking up becuase of SCHIP?

I guess I'm ahead of the curve here as I've always been a "stockpiler" of pipe tobacco. I'm a one-blend smoker so that makes it really easy for me. Every so often I order a few pounds of it and pack it in large Mason jars. I mark the date I packed the jar and store it in a cool, dry place. I've got a dozen or more such jars at the moment. If it's ever outlawed or taxed into the stratosphere then I can thumb my nose at them and enjoy quite a few years of smoking before I'm out.

I'm with you. I tend to go through a pound of pipe tobacco every two months so I'm set for about 3 years... not that I'm going to stop buying more!
