stopped by a pipe shop today

I stop at this pipe shop in york here to check out some tobacco when i went in there I met the guy who I think runs the joint he is a Cuban that worked for Cohiba in Cuba. Got to watch him roll cigars wile I was there. Anyway all they had there was jars of pipe tobacco and I don't know who made them but I decided to get some anyway along with a couple brazilia cigars he made. He recommended a couple of the most popular so I got some no bite and some mango. I have not tried any yet but just wanted to know what your opinion was on no name jars at pipe shops any good or should i buy some name brand tins.

To each their own bro. The nearest pipe shop to me has about 2 dozen house blends and absolutely no name brands. The handful I have tried thus far has been pretty damn good. I've send some up to Bob to get his honest assessment and thus far he thinks their pretty good as well.

My take, give 'em a try. If you like them then great. If not, then at least you know.

I'd definately recommend though exploring www.pipesandcigars.com as well though. You can pick up some sweet baccy for damn near nothing.

I ended up trying some of the mango last night and got a little bit of tongue bit. The tobacco was kinda wet I think could this be the cause. It would not stay lit and had to keep puffing on it to try to keep it going. Do you think this could have caused it to by puffing on it to fast. It had some good flavor at first but started getting a little bitter. Also not sure I am packing it right I read all the post and thought I had a good concept but it might just take some experience.

Sometimes you need to let the tobacco sit out for 15-20 mins if it feels really wet out of the pouch.

Smoking at a fast pace will contribute to tongue bite. Don't fight the pipe to keep it lit...re-lights are just the nature of the beast. As you get better and better at packing then you'll find yourself re-lighting less and less. Even guys who have been smoking for years still re-light throughout soooooo....

Keep a slow pace and take small sips on the pipe. Tasting pipe tobacco is awhole lot differant the cigars I've noticed...but it does come with time.

Keep at it!

+1 on everything that Jax has said. Good info/advice.

House blends can be great or not so good, it depends on your own personal taste. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Another reason for the tongue bite you are getting from the Mango baccy is the extra sugar that they put in there with the flavorings. Like Jax said, let the baccy dry out a bit.

Take out enough baccy for a bowlful and let it sit for a few minutes until it dries out some. The baccy should feel slightly spongy but not stick together for about the proper humidity level. Just take a pinch in your fingers and squeeze it together, it should start to come apart almost immediately. If it stays clumped up, let it dry a bit more.
