flake tobacco drying out too fast?

anyone else have that problem? you crack the tin, you have a bowl once a week or so, and every time you go re-open the tin, the tobacco gets drier, and drier.
it is now to the point where when i try to "rub it out", all it does it crumble and some just turns to dust.

so, how do i stop this from happening?
do i put it in a mason jar/ceramic canister in a ziploc bag?
do i get a "humidor" big enough to hold tins?

does anyone else have any problems with this?
i'm sure it won't be a problem come summertime because of the high humidity around here (but it's bone dry in the winter).

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

After cracking the tin and letting it dry out just a little, I put it in a ziplock bag.

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

I haven't had much trouble with my flake drying out, i keep it in a mason jar either loose or in a baggy. Still damp after 3 months of in an out of that jar.
Hope that helps.

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

I know I'm missing some of the flavor of folded flakes but Im just a TAD OC
so I rub out the entire tin and bag it and put it back in the tin. Lasts and lasts.

I do the mason jar thing too - seems to really work well - in fact, whenever I open a tin, I out the tobacco in a mason jar.

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

I have friends too that put it in a baggie and back in the tin. Me, I got a little water bottle with a sprayer at the local Michael's and spray my tobacco if it gets too dry, then smoke it or jar it. I tried a humidified box for a while but monitoring for mold was a losing battle.

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

thanks for all the input.
i had thought about "pre-rubbing" upon opening of a new tin of flake, then putting it in a ceramic jar. i have 4 of them, filled with nasty old bulk aromatics that i'm no longer smoking.

so, looks as though i'm going to go RUB 'EM OUT then ziploc 'em, toss 'em into 1 jar for safe keeping.

root, yep, i have 6+ yr old aromatics in my ceramic jars that are still too moist to smoke from when i bought 'em. lol... i know their effectiveness.

also, a long while back, my old roommate/co-worker, that i got into pipe smoking, gave me two tins of old C&D tobacco (black duck and cross eyed crickett - if i remember correctly) that were rather dry. i've read other replies in review sites that people don't like how dry C&Ds tins come, so they mist 'em a bit to moisten them up. i've thought about putting them in the ceramic jars w/ humidification disk for a few weeks to moisten them back up.

That might not be all the jars doing, the PG that they drown some aromatics in makes me wonder. I put a bowls worth out to sit from the big free box of tobacco last month and it still ain't to the near side of dry.lol..

Re: flake tobacco drying out too fast?

I never keep any tobacco in its tin....

I have tobacco that is over 30 years old and when I open the Mason/Kerr jar it is still moist....

If you want to keep your tobacco in the tin it came in then just get yourself
a big tupperware tub and put all your tobacco in it...and keep it sealed.

I have friends that do this and they never have a problem.

If your tobacco get too dry you can always add moisture to it...

Put a couple of drops of Distilled Water in the tin and let it sit for a couple of days..

What I do is ..I buy a clay flower pot..(the red ones)..then I break it up into silver dollar size pieces.. Then I soak them in Distilled water for a about 10 mins...

I preheat an oven to around 450 deg...then I put the clay pieces on a sheet and put them in the oven....I do this to make sure to burn out anything that could have been soaked up by the clay..

After 20 mins or so I let them cool...then once cooled I soak a piece of the pottery in some distilled water for 30 secs or so...

I take it out of the water and I will take a paper towl and blot off any water that is still on the outside of the clay...

I put the dampened pottery in the jar of dry tobacco and let it stay in the jar overnight...

This will allow the tobacco to absorb the moisture out of the clay without the tobacco actually getting wet......

I learned this trick from my Great Grandfather and he only smoked clay pipes...

That sounds like some solid "country wisdom" I think it's a great idea.

thanks for sharing the tricks your Great Grandfather passed down.

Crap - I opened both of my tins yesterday just to smell them - yummy - but now I have to worry about them drying out.
