How long to smoke a bowl -

I realize there are different size bowls, but in general, how long does it take to smoke a bowl?

I think I am going too slow. I pack according to the above FAQ, but still am constantly relighting. If I go faster, it gets too hot.

There is a whole lot of variables that go into smoking a pipe. I am far from an expert but being a stay at home dad of a now 6 month old i do get to smoke alittle and read a lot. So i say an avg. bowl lasts me 1 to 1.5 hr.
A lot of little things go to into this; moisture of the tobacco, packing the pipe (play with this), i am still having to work alot with this because of all the different cuts i smoke), how fast of a puffer are you (smoking fast draws moisture down to the bottom of the bowl making for more relights in the second half of bowls) (some say you can never smoke to slow only too fast), Are you getting good coverage of the surface on your light up and getting burn across the whole surface or is the ash too thick for the flame to reach the unburned stuff (you may have to dump, stir, level and relight.
Now if you can put this all together, you like me, could possibly take 1-5 relights off your pipe game. (I said i wasn't an expert) So yes you may get time to cool your lighter for 15-30 mins or it might just be a fews puffs and your back at it due to any number of these or other factors.

Just keep at it and you'll find bliss is in the bottom, cause you'll get to fill it again.

In my very limited experience with my pipe and its very small bowl, it takes maybe 20 minutes to finish with no or very few relights (I puff alot).

well, depends on how good you are at packing the pipe, how good of tobacco you're smoking, how broken in the pipe is, how wet the tobacco is...

it takes practice.

an average sized bowl will last me well over an hour, and if i really wanted to be anal about it, probably near to 1.5-2 hrs if i wanted to.

for me, normally something has to be done around the house. i don't get many times to just "sit there and relax"...
if i had the time, i could smoke for about 2 hours on one big bowl.

I find that a decently packed bowl will last me a little over one hour.

I smoke a cheap cob on the way home at night. It's a 40-50 minute ride and I find that, after the first light/tamp/light/tamp I get about 15- 20 minutes before needing a relight. Then I get about the same off the second light. I'm usually close enough to home to "air out" a little by then and, when I get there and dump out the dottle, I usually see there's enough left for another 15 mins.

A minimum of an hour, but there are many factors that go into like IHT said. First and foremost there is very little sit down and relax time these days. On a good night, wife in grad school + warm outside + kids don't need help with homework + laundry complete + dishes/kitchen clean = longer, more enjoyable smoke.

If it takes you only 20 min to smoke a bowl then you are puffing too hard..

Just think baby puffs....

In fact once I get a pipe lit ....there is very little smoke in my room...

If you take a puff and smoke billows out of your mouth then you are drawing way too much and too hard...

To really get the flavors out of pipe tobacco you take baby puffs and one of the hardest things about pipe smoking is not to puff it like a cig...

I will admit this is even hard for me to do...

An easy way to know if you are smoking too fast and hard is how hot the pipe gets..

If your pipe gets really hot to touch then you are smoking too fast..and this is a good way to actually smoke the briar.....

I have to update my earlier response - I am working on the same bowl now for two days. By the time I am done, it will have taken around 2 hours.

I miss having all of the smoke that cigars give me. That is one of the reasons that I got into pipe/cigar smoking in the first place. Love the thick smoke.
