Re: Opinions on the savinelli filter

It's cool after I buy a new pipe and after smoking it, I run a cleaner through it and wonder why in the hell the pipe cleaner won't go through, then I realize it's in there, take it out and never put another one in.

I used them 'til I ran out and realized what a nice open draw the pipe had without the filter.

that's what I was figuring. I actually just found some that came with my Tundra 320. Totally forgot I had them, I don't think i will try them though.

I agree with dogsplayinpoker about the draw being better without the filter. Further, if you get used to the taste of your pipe tobacco without a filter, it'll taste different with a filter - and usually not better. I never use 'em, preferring to run a pipe cleaner into the stem and shank if I get a gurgle.

On the other hand, I have a GBD that could use a filter.

I agree with all of the above posters. The draw is far better without and I don't like the filter much as you cannot get the pipe cleaner through with one in. It does take some of the harshness off some tobacoos but all I find is that I end up with a gurgling pipe that I can't run a cleaner through!

Re: Opinions on the savinelli filter

For months I would take out the filter and smoke my Savs without one. It was okay. I started using them and have had much more pleasurable experiences. IMHO there is no taste issue with the Balsa filter. Now, the filters that come with a corn cob leave something to be desired. Also, none of my Savs have ever gurgled. I've only had that issue with a filterless Kriswill. I think how the pipe draws is 80% on how it is packed and 20% how moist the tobacco is.

I make up my own stats 95% of the time.

You can reuse the filter, but I don't recommend smoking the same one more than 3 times. It will sour, especially if you smoke aromatics or other really moist tobacco. You'll find it mentioned on many, many posts here the recommendation to let your tobacco sit out for a while before you pack it. The less moisture the less chance of gurgle, less chance of tongue bite, and more flavor.

I started out using them, but in my sav I haven't noticed any gurgle or excess moisture, so I don't even mess with them anymore.

Re: Opinions on the savinelli filter

It's a plus when looking to buy a pipe. But I never leave the filter in. The draw is much better than a regular drilled pipe. And they tend to smole a bit cooler.

Re: Opinions on the savinelli filter

As said in a post above, the balsa filter is actually not a problem if you dont over-use it. I toss it at the end of the day (I average 2 or 3 bowls a day) and clean the pipe. Then it goes back in the rack for a week or so til it comes up in the rotation again.

The balsa absorbes just enough moisture that it's OK to me. I dont get any gurgle at least not with my tobacco and smoking style. It doesnt' "filter" the smoke by any means, just absorbs moisture. They're cheap and easy to deal with so I've kept using them though if I ever ran out I wouldn't be panicked at all.

Re: Opinions on the savinelli filter

I rate the 6mm system very highly, takes the bite out, stops gurgling most of the time...I usually use them only once.
