Pipe Lighters

After using 13 matches on a small bowl I was thinking about a pipe lighter. I'm assuming as I smoke more I'll use less matches but a lighter would be nice. I'm trying to see if I can get that nice browning on the meerschaum so I've a cotton glove on. (Yes it does look lame.) Well I singed the glove and then the wood/fabric friction made it hard to drop the match.

Anyway, what do you use? That Colibri gooseneck looked interesting.

I've never had good luck with Colibri lighters. I have several, and none of them work any more (they are in a pile somewhere). I just went out and bought a 5-pack of good ole trusty BIC lighters. They are working just fine.

Never heard of the cotton glove thing... link to info?

I'd have to second that. We cary Colibri lighters but honestly, they get returned much more often than any of our other lighters. They are VERY particular about the fuel you use. Must be triple refined or better. Funny that on my personal Colibris (gifts) I've had more trouble using Colibri fuel than using much cheaper, 5x refined fuel from Vector.

The glove thing with meerschaums is really old-school, and in our experience, is totally unneccessary and counter-productive to coloring in most cases. If your hands are clean you should be good to go. Any natural oils transferred from your hand to the protective wax coating on the pipe will encourage the draw of color to the outer surface. Just don't hold your pipe by the stone if you've been reading the paper or changed the oil on your car!:eeek:

I posted a couple of lighters that I personally like and use for myself in the other post from MaduroMojo. Basically, you want a soft-flame lighter (not a torch) that comes out at a 45 or 90 degree angle. Using a straight flame, in particular with a meer pipe, can cause scortching of the rim which cannot be removed. Doesn't hurt the pipe, but will hurt the looks if you care. The lighters I mentioned are the Vector Dupla and the Thunderbird pipe lighter insert for Zippo cases ('cause I hate the smell and hassle of liquid fuel in a zippo lighter)

As a newbie I've been using one of those long butane lighters made to light your BBQ or a fireplace since the only other lighters I have are torches. I'm glad I'm the only one around since it looks funny when I'm using the darn thing. I've tried to use some long matches I got from a shop here in town but they just don't last long, and even after letting the sulfur burn off I still get some type (at least initially) of taste from the match. I finally gave in and just ordered a KGM Pipe lighter insert from Tobacco Barn so I'm excited to see how it works out for me.

I hope it works out for you. Just remember that the flow valve for fuel is built into the cap lever so don't leave it open without having it lit or you'll waste all your gas. And remember to flip the lever closed when you pull it out to fill it or it will go in one end and out the other.

Not that I doubt your intelligence but these are the top two support questions we get.

Don't hesitate to call us if you have any questions!

Thanks for the helpful information. I appreciate it! It sounds like it works just like a normal Zippo. I'll let you know how I do with it. Hopefully I got the order in in time so it'll go out today.

I have to agree with you on the regular Zippo pipe insert. That thing is a pain in the arse!! It never seems to have enough flame to get to the very bottom of the bowl. I'm going to see about getting either the Thunderbird insert or an Old Boy very, very soon!!

A friend of mine gifted me a disposable 45 degree pipe lighter called a Side Light. Unfortunately, I can't find them anywhere. It's really convenient because I don't have to worry about losing it.

While we don't have the Side Light you referred to (although I can check in Vegas at the Tobacco Plus trade show thursday when I go), we do have the following very inexpensive lighters:
http://www.tobacco-barn.com/p-4564-t...rometheus.aspx
http://www.tobacco-barn.com/p-4571-i...rometheus.aspx
http://www.tobacco-barn.com/p-4573-b...e-wtamper.aspx

These are all soft-flame lighters with a 45 degree flame, all butane and all flint lighters. They SAY you can refill all of them with the right adapter but I've never tried. The Bently is the only one that you can change the flint on if you intend these for re-use.

I knew the Bentley would show up sooner or later. I've heard nothing but good things about that little guy.

Speaking of the original Zippo insert: How is the new "Cool Fuel" Zippo fuel compare to the old stuff. Is it pretty smelly? I was thinking about getting some for the short term to have a soft flame Zippo until I get around to buying the Thunderbird insert.

Also, I received my Thunderbird Pipe Insert from Tobacco Barn on Saturday and it works great! I just need to get another case so I can have my torch and the pipe lighter without having to swap them out all the time.

While I've not used it myself so I can't say, I've heard both sides of fence chime in. Those who say the smell isn't as bad as well as those who say it smells just as bad. Guess that is all a matter of taste.

I do know that it is a pain to deal with liquid fuel IMHO. I can't tell you how many times mine has leaked in my pocket and .. Well you can imagine how that looked plus I didn't have FIRE for my 'baccy! Shhh.... we are a Z**** distributor so don't tell anyone I said that.
