Favorite English Blends

I have smoked quite a number of "English" blends. Some of the blends I have enjoyed in the past are:
S.G.'s- Squadron Leader, Skiff, Perfection.
Dunhill- Early Morning Pipe, London Blend, 965, Nightcap, Standard Medium, Standard Mild.
Presbyterian Mixture
Esoterica Tobacciana- Penzance (rich Latakia, full flavored) probably not for beginners.
CAO (Dan)-Old Ironsides (another rich blend)
Altadis- Count Pulaski (sold in bulk only) very nice medium strength
G.L. Pease- Blackpoint
McClelland- British Woods (used to be a fav.), #5110 Bulk, Frog Morton.
There are a huge number of this type on the market. For further info. see tobaccoreviews.com.
I no longer smoker much of this type of tobacco. Latakia overload I guess.
When I do desire some of this type I usually turn to the more subtle blends like Squadron Leader or Count Pulaski. Penzance is probably my all-time favorite but it has too much Latakia for me now.

You listed several of my old favorites (Penzance, FM & BW). I do believe that Count Pulaski is my pound for pound (or more correctly) pound for $$ english tobacco.

I had 8oz of CP shipped from www.pipesandcigars.com for $14.94.....It's almost gone and I'll be buying more soon.

Loving Penzance, Frog Morton, C&D 504 Balkan, and DH965 right now. I have a few others here to try soon: British Woods, Fox&Hound, Highland Targa, etc.

Only so much tie in the the day; and so many bowls to smoke!

Re: Favorite English Blends

I've got 16 oz of Squadron Leader and 965 resting quite nicely. Seem to be the ones I go to more frequently than anything else.

Generally speaking it contains Latakia tobacco along with various other tobaccos Virginias, Orientals (usually small amount); for newbies sometimes tastes like burning twigs and other pungent flavors. An aquired taste to be sure. Usually smells unpleasant to those in your smoking area. Sometimes confused with Balkan blends which usually contain a higher level of Oriental tobaccos.

Just asking that question is almost sure to start a debate among experienced pipers.

Fox & Hounds is an example of a mild English.

Rattrays Highland Targe is a very nice mild Scottish Blend. Lots of Virginia, small amount of Latakia. A good first smoke of the day.

Actually, they sell it at Levitt & Pierce too, which is the sister shop to Ehrlich's in Harvard Square in Cambridge. Here is a little more info on their blends:

http://pipepages.com/dpe13

It is an old catalog, but most of their blends are still available. I think I may have to have a bowl of DPE tonight!!!

Re: Favorite English Blends

My experience with english blends (or pipe tobacco in general) isn't very extensive, but from what i have tried my favoruites would be D.P.E, LJ Peretti's British Blend, and Dunhill Medium Mixture.

Never had DPE, heard good things about Perettis' British, and Dunhills' Medium is very good too.

Re: Favorite English Blends

I like a lot of English/Balkan ...blends but the best is probably

Duhill's Babys Bottom....Super smooth but you can't buy it in the US...

I also love Jack's Tobacco's...

Bayou Dog or Teton Mountain Dog are great ....
