Im about to bust my pipe cherry!

Hey everyone!

On Wednesday (payday) I will be making the purchase of my first pipe and tobacco

Im getting a varnished corn cob pipe, just to start out, and Im going to get 3 15g (sorry, 1oz) sample packs.

These are the packs I will be getting:

Levy’s Aromatic Breeze
A superior aromatic mixture characterized by extra mild Black Cavendish tobaccos, mature Virginia and a touch of Burley. It has been flavoured with an extremely mild blend of sweet vanilla type flavours and fresh fruity notes to obtain a long-lasting taste and a very pleasant aroma. Easy to fill into a pipe, slow burning with a cool smoke.

Levy’s Light & Dark
Aromatic tobacco. Virginia, Oriental and Burley tobaccos in a Cavendish Blend. Excellent aroma and taste with this delightfully mild blend. Strong Vanilla with a touch of chocolate essence distinguishes this mild blend.

and

Levy’s Millenium
Aromatic Blend. Developed from fine Virginia tobaccos blended with Mexican Burley and topped with 2 cuts of sweet Black Cavendish. Medium loose cut tobacco. A subtle hint of French berries captures the essence of this elegantly mild mixture.

These were recommended to me by the store owner. Hope it all works out. Im really excited about getting and smoking a pipe!

Ive got tobacco on the brain right now, so I had to pul out a 'gar. I chose a Perdomo Fresh Rolled.

Hopefully I will get my package by Friday, so I can smoke it up on my weekend!

Happy smokes people!

Joel,

Congrats buddy! I just recently jumped onto the pipe scene about a month ago and now own 3 pipes and already have about 10 different tobaccos in my ever growing collection.

A piece of advice that was given to me about corncobs, its strictly second hand as I have not smoked out of one. Smoking a corncob pipe isn't anything like smoking a briar or meer. If you find that you love the corncob you may love briars or meer. If you hate the corncob you have not learned anything about whether you would like briars or meers. Again this is just what was told to me(by a good number of people though).

Congrats. Let know how the the samples are. Also, see if you can pick up some Carter Hall. It's a drug store tobacco, but it may the best friend a cob ever had. Simply put, it's wonderful stuff. Behaves just as well in a briar.

Enjoy,
Byron in Owensboro, KY

Hey lads. Thanks for the replys.

Im getting a cob pipe mainly to get used to smoking a pipe. Keeping temp under control, packing etc. Once I have that down pat, Ill get to a nice meer pipe, or a briar. Buttah, Im not expecting the cob to be great either! Thanks for the heads up though. I woul have been a bit miffed if I tried the pipe, and was nowhere near what I expected.

Byron, unfortunately, this is Australia. We get nowhere near the amount of fun stuff you guys get over there. If I do go after it, it would have to be sourced from 'over there'

One day, when I do a big order of 'fun stuff', Ill get a 50g tin thrown in too.

Thanks! 2 days to go...

Yeah there were/are some nice pipes on there. I as outbid on all that I bid on. I low balled them. You just never know sometimes. Once picked up a killer home theater for less than $100 delivered. One bid. Mine!

Well, I ordered my pipe and 2 1oz bags. Should ave those by Friday, fingers crossed.

Me and my girl are going into Sydney city for a bit of lunch on Saturday, so I will take the time to visit my "local" B&M. Will try a bit of ths, and a bit of that. He said he can line up some samples for me, so that would be ace. Ill check out his pipes whilst in there too.

Will keep this thread updated.

Well, I did it. Walked into my buddy's office Monday and mentioned (yet again) that I'd be considering smoking a pipe, whereupon he offered me an old half-bent briar (he's just come into a really nice Nording).

I promptly went up front and bought a lighter/pipe tool, then set to cleaning the thing out. Once satisfactorily completed, I set out to buy a nice mild tobac and finally settled on Dunhill EMP. Stuff's been in our warehouse for several years. Also, our Villiger/Stokkebye rep set me up with a tin of Orlik Golden Sliced yesterday.

And...I like it! So far, so good. I smoked my first bowl yesterday, and am having another this morning. Might wind up replacing a cigar a day with a bowl of baccy instead!

Well purchased my first pipe, and I got some nice tobaccos. So far Im smoking mild aromatics. They are quite nice!nI got some spicy baccys too, which im not too keen on, so I will mix them up with a very mild aromatic, to take the kick out of it.

So far, its been a very plesant experiance. Im enjoying siting on teh front deck pufffing away. I havent had a gar for near 2 weeks!!

Might go light up a bowl now and crank the tunes on Triple J.

oh, now I have to clean up a vase of flowers that I watched fall off my coffee table. The heat will evaporate the water nicely.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Pipe Smoking (leojvs & hayward) It really is a nice change of pace. I like the fact that I can let the pipe go out and relight as often as needed. Also, I like the fact that I do not have to dedicate an hour or more to my pipe.

Make sure you work in the bowl all the way to the bottom. If you find that at the end of your smoke you still have unburnt tobacco in the bottom, then only pack about half a bowl. you need the char to get all the way down in the bowl.

Also, I have about 6 pipes 4 brier and 2 cobs. I love my cobs, they are super pipes and with some blends smoke a heck of a lot better than my handcrafted Boswell (which is my favorite pipe). It all depends on the blend and the condition of your pipe.

A few tins to look for if you can get them are:

Frog Morton - any of the 4
Nightcap - Dunhill
Squadron Leader - forget who blends it...

Good luck and enjoy.

Tim

Yeah cheers Tim.

Dont worry, I smoke mine down to the last bit of leaf. Mmmmm

Im just getting the hang of how tight to pack the bowl, and puffing to get a good burn, but to keep the temp in check.

Next time I get an order from the States, Ill have a look for the tins you mentioned.

Right now I have a few house blends, and some W.O. Larsen.

Its keeping me out of trouble thats for sure. Now, as its still raining, & I was planng on doing yard work, so I get a bowl prepped, or light a stick? Decisions...
