Re: clay pipes

Sure do! I've got an old churchwarden, a new churchwarden and an older smaller clay. It's an interesting smoke, very clean. It's a good way to really taste the tobacco, clay being a much more neutral substance than briar. I usually smoke english blends in them and the long stem/shank of the churchwarden really tames some of those strong mixtures. I enjoy them, even though I don't smoke them nearly as often as my briars and meerschaums.

churchwarden/taverns are the way to go. I can smoke the really heavy blends (I love latakia ans perique) and the pipes are inexpensive too. problem is, when I'm outside smoking the pipe the neighborhood kids ask me why I'm smoking weed outside

Like a meer, that way? A little less of a "blended" taste - a tad more crisp, maybe?

Yes, definitely. The best analogy I can think of offhand is the different way a beer tastes in a glass as opposed to a can - although not to the same degree (level).

I guess I like the different pipes for different reasons. Briar because of the grain and the "handfeel", meerschaum for the carving and the (usually) light weight, clay for the cleanness and the nostalgia, and a cob because it's a decent inexpensive smoke. All have their downsides as well, which makes sense because if any one was perfect 100% of the time, why fool with the others?

And your answer is most surely "so that the weed doesn't stink up the house"?

I ran across the 16" tavern pipes online and was wondering how they smoked myself.

the bowl can get hot, so you have to hold it by the stem right behind the bowl.

Re: clay pipes

I just ordered a Lepeltier clay pipe. Double walled so should smoke cooler. Rubber bit so I don't have to hold it while I smoke. I'm really looking forward to getting it. The bowl is smaller than I like but the good news is they don't have to rest. A little stem cleaning between bowls and a good hot water rinse about every 3-4 bowls and I can smoke that sucker all day if I wanna!

Then again, who wants to smoke the same pipe over and over day after day? That's why we have so many!
