Couple questions after smoking the pipe a couple weeks

Howdy!

Been smoking the pipe for a couple weeks now, about 8 times or so all told. I'm to the point now where I can keep it going for awhile between relights, and I think I'm finally getting the hang of slowly drawing on the pipe without inhaling.

Seems like the plastic stem (straight) of my corn cob tends to make me salivate if I stick it in my mouth much past my lips. So, I do all my smoking while holding the pipe with my hand. Plus, I can taste the plastic if I stick the stem into my mouth too far. Would a stem made of different material help?

How warm is too warm for the bowl to get on a Corn Cob? If I can feel warmth when holding the bowl, but it isn't hot, is that normal? Or should it ideally be cool to the touch?

the taste of plastic is a draw back of a cob, all my pipes have vulcanite stems which I don't believe you can get on a cobb. If the bowl is to hot when touched to your cheek then its to hot. hope this helps.

By too hot, you mean too hot to keep touching?

If it's to hot to hold then yes it's extremy to hot....slow down your smoking. You want to sip the tobacco. Your hot pipe may be why you taste plastic.

It's not too hot to hold, just feels pleasantly warm. I was just trying to narrow down what exactly "too hot" was.

I can also taste the plastic in some plastic cups. Sometimes I can taste the metal in forks/spoons/etc. Styrofoam though is the worst, it is impossible for me to drink from a foam cup.

Might end up getting a non-cob pipe sooner than I had planned. I hope I can;t taste vulcanite.

If you can't place the pipe bowl comfortably next to your cheek then you're smoking to hot. Thats just a general rule. slowing down your smoking will cool things off a bit, it also depends what you're smoking, some tobacco's burn hotter than others.

You seem to have a keen sense of taste which is great in pipe smoking. I would suggest you look for an acrylic stemmed pipe. I have a problem with sometimes tasting vulcanite. Normally the lower grade pipes with lower grade vulcanite, like old estate(used) pipes.

Re: Couple questions after smoking the pipe a couple weeks

Sounds like you're getting the hang of things. And yes sounds like you've got an acute sense of taste. I'm not usually aware of the plastic stem of my cobs.

If it's too hot to hold against your cheek then you're puffing too fast. Slow it down - long, steady draws on the pipe, not puffing like a locomotive.

Vulcanite may still give you a hint of "taste". The acrylic stems probably won't so try one of those when you graduate to your next pipe.
