another smoking ban

so i finally got around to reading friday's campus paper only to see wvu is considering a complete campus ban on smoking, forcing those who would smoke to stand in little roofed boxes, hotboxing themselves. since i live in a non-smoking apartment with way too many smoke dectetors, smoking outside is my only opition.
but these social fascist, scared by reports of massive second hand smoking have decided rather than risk the welathfare of those smokers who would not normally be exposed to such large amounts of second hand smoke.
these boxes, which will expose these smokers, and to be fair let's just put it out there that most cigarette smokers or minorities or from lower socio-economic stati, can roughly be equated to passive gas chambers for these "undesirables".
to say nothing of what the massive amounts of second cigarette smoke will do to me, a pipe smoker. any lawyers read this site? any liability there?
to conclude my rant, while i myself dont like cigarettes, we must stand with all smokers for we will all be painted with the same brush.

Be a Rebel my friend! After all you're in the South, don't let these morons deter you. Light up in a quiet place outside you're apartment and exercise your God Given Liberties! What are they gonna do? Roll out the campus SWAT team on you?

Re: another smoking ban

I'm fine with no indoor smoking in public buildings. I get that. But I'm quite sure that within 20 years all college campuses will be no smoking - even outside. Now, I even understand not smoking within a certain distance of entries - health issues aside, people shouldn't have to deal with that just to walk into a building. But, I can't get behind no outdoor smoking. Might as well ban barbecuing at that point.

Re: another smoking ban

I just saw a survey sent around on my campus as well about possibly making it smoke-free. I'm speechless. Me, and my cigar smoking buddy, will be holding a smoke-in outside the Humanities building every day. Good luck finding teachers who will deal with this workload AND put up with an invasion of their private life for such a small salary. mbleh! I really do try to remain calm about all this, but C'MON!

I sadly see no end in sight to assaults on our freedom.

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.

kinda like boiling a frog..you don't put a live frog in boiling water..he'll jump out. You put him in slightly warm water so he relaxes, then you turn the heat up to a boil..that's how you boil a frog

Exactly. Keep getting the majority of people to impose taxes on the minority. Change issue, repeat. Over and over. Tobacco, big cars, fast food.

Frighteningly, yes ... "Dr. Strangelove" or
how I learned to love the bomb (or something to that effect).

Hysterical movie!

Re: another smoking ban

This is a new fad I guess. Banning every right of the smoker. Here in Arkansas they have just passed a tobacco tax to fund a trauma center. Arkansas State University is talking about making their campus a smoke free campus. Now the city of Little Rock is trying to pass a ban on smoking in city parks and city golf courses.

More taxes..More gov control...Fewer rights. Change we can believe in!!!

EDIT: Forgot to add Arkansas has a state wide smoking ban in resturaunts and public buildings. This includes no smoking on hospital property. Not even at the back of the parking lot in your own car.

Re: another smoking ban

Even as an enthusiastic pipe smoker, I don't believe I have a right to smoke anywhere. But I do think allowing people to smoke outdoors - even in public spaces like parks - is just common sense. I watched the 80s movie Wall Street a month back, and I was happily shocked at the scenes of men smoking in business meetings. Cigarettes were the most common, then stogies, but there was a guy or two with a pipe! I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't love to be able to light up my pipe indoors just about anywhere, but I understand why that's not allowed.
