outdoor to indoor pipe smell

Prepare yourselves for a question not to often asked, especially since it is well kindof embarassing to ask ..If i smoke my pipe outside , and when finished come back into the house..will the smell still linger insdie the house. In other words, i know some of your partners do not allow smoking in the house, but does the pipe smell cause the area where you put your pipe after smoking tend to smell like smoke ?

I notice when I bring my pipe back in that it smells for an hour or so in the little area around the pipe but it goes away.

Yep, a bit, and for a time.

The wifage does not allow pipe smoking inside, and we've had discussions on where my pipe(s) will rest.

For a few hours, you will get a pipe smell. This happens while the moisture produced from burning tobacco dissapates from the briar. Also, until the residual tar hardens, it will give a bit of a funk.

If you clean your pipe best you can after the smoke, and do a throuogh cleaning bi-monthly or monthly, depending on the frequency of use, there should not be much of a noticeable odor.

My wife didn't like my pipe smoking and eventually gave me an ultimatum... either my pipe had to go or she would go.

I missed her for the first few weeks.

Re: outdoor to indoor pipe smell

Well, I've got an not-often stated answer.
I've got to frequently move for school, and I spent a month in Welch, WV where I took my pipes with me--luckily, they stunk that day (apparently the person who was supposed to room with me said "they stink"), so that gave me a room to myself! w00t!

Well, a few months later, another 2 had to go down there; and the one staying in the room I was in said that there was some sort of "funny smell" to it. It may have been my pipes, I don't know (and really don't care).

Re: outdoor to indoor pipe smell

I used to smoke my pipe before class and during breaks and I did notice how horrible I smelled after stuffing it in my pocket after I was done. Not very appealing to the rest of the class.

well this strikes me as one of those situations where I might throw caution into the wind and just experiment.

Re: outdoor to indoor pipe smell

I've noticed that if you give the pipe a little clean before you go back in, it usually won't stink up anything too bad. Another idea to cut down on the smell is to linger outside with your pipe out for a few more minutes, maybe 10 or so. Take the time to write a journal about your pipe experience (if that is your thing) or take the time to mentally prepare yourself for the icy stare you will receive when you come in.

I live in Canada and I thought it would be cold outside...

Re: outdoor to indoor pipe smell

Let me start by saying I am very new to pipe smoking. When I say "new", I'm saying that I've been smoking pipes for a couple of months now, if that. After a couple of months of smoking pipes outside and letting my pipes rest on the mantle, I ocassionally catch a whiff of sweet pipe smell in the living room. It's not strong at all and is definitely nota smokey smell. I'm not sure if the smell will become more pronounced as the "cake" in the bowls of my pipes get more developed but for now it is not a problem and my wife has not complained of anything.

AMEN brother! Tell the wife unit you dont like her nailpolish, the 30 pairs of shoes, the perfume smell, etc and tell her to get over it.

Make a reasonable effort to accomodate her issue (smoke next to the window, or perhaps only in your dedicated MAN-CAVE in which no female is allowed anyhow, etc) but how about you MEN grow a pair here, huh?

Re: outdoor to indoor pipe smell

I can totally understand the attitude about telling the wife to get over it. But for me, I do not smoke in the house because I have two sons ages 8 and 4 that I do not desire to "force" to inhale my pipe smoke. Now when these boys are out of my house and on their own, well, the pipes will either be enjoyed in my Lazy Boy, or one of the boys rooms will become MY game/smoking room.

....Just so not remove the stem right after smoking your pipe. Give it several hours to cool.
