What am I doing Wrong?!

I just started pipe smoking I have 3 briar pipes and rotate them 1 pipe per day but I can not seem to get any cake building up i have smoked about 7 half bowl and after 2 smokes i apply a think layer of saliva i clean the pipe after smoke but i shake the ash and dump out excess and gently clean the ash that covered the bowl inside before i smoke ? any help is greatly appreciated.

Might be a little early in the game to have the cake you need after only 7 half-bowls but you should see SOME cake starting? There's no cake at all??!?!?

when i bought the new pipe it was blackish inside now it looks like its kinda a light brown and no cake

These guys are the best....no really....

I am one that believes cake is overrated.....if it happens it happens....The worst cake is one that forms by bits of tobacco....I think everyone can agree on that....patience young Padawon patience.

7 half bowls?? Thats nothing... try not to do too much rubbing it with saliva and all of that... I don't think that is needed. Just smoke slowly and carefully and eventually you will have more cake then you can eat.

I do like to wet the rim of my bowl with saliva on the finger to prevent torch marks from the lighter. Picked it up in one of the links.

Human trick: 50 bowls, smoked slowly, one-third to one-half filled, if you really want to watch that deep conical cake develop. Pipes properly prepped are a pastime of patience for the patient person. It doesn't happen fast. Some tobaks make hard cake, some make softer cake. Some briar seems to resist cake formation compared to others.

(Old, but young at heart) Sam Mona, pipe store owner in suburban Detroit, has this briar that he has smoked for decades. The cake, conical and quite thick at the bottom half, makes for a pipe he says is practically impossible to overheat. It looked to me like the bowl had grown rather small at the expense of the cake but, for sure, it was caked. He worked the stuff into shape over the years with a round-tipped dull scraper blade and, in a word, it was perfect.

ROFL, OK, this sounds so obscenely wrong in so many ways...being a cigar smoker and occasionally fire up a pipe once in a blue moon, the cake thing sounds nasty.
