E11.75 is a little rich for my blood for 50g tin of tobacco... that comes out to @ $15 a tin not including shipping. Has anyone tried the Altadis copycat brands for Nightcap and EMP?

Not a fan of those two but word on the street is they fall short. They also say McClelland has a good copy of EMP, something similar in name but I can't remember what it is.

You can add me to the list. My primary love of tobacco smoking is Dunhill 965 and Early morning pipe. Either straight or as a mixture. They are truly the blends I can count on.

That's the word I get as well. McClellands reportedly has done a much better job of duplicating the EMP (they named it AM Pipe - clever!) than Altadis, which is what I would expect. Not being a fan of Dunhill EMP, I haven't tried it but if McClellands comes out with a 965 clone, I'll be towards the head of the line.

Yep, well oftentimes price is an indication of quality and the altadis stuff was too cheap to be believed. Thanks for the input.

From everything that's been said, this sounds like the direction that should be taken moving forward. Have companies who care about pipe tobacco do the best job that they can in duplicating the old blends. After all, even if BAT did resurrect Dunhill it would be in name only, and who wants to line the pockets of a big company like that just so they can capitalize on an effectively defunct manufacturer's brand identity and customer nostalgia?

Tobacco blends are proprietary. No tobacco blender is going to give away their recipe unless they go out of business and "sell" the blend to another blender.

So what happens is the blender trying to dupe a particular blend has to literally take it apart under a microscope and study it, as well as burn parts of it, smell it, etc etc. That's a lot of R&D. That work is going to go into the price and if it's too cheap, chances are good that the necessary work was not done thoroughly. McClellands is meticulous. If their name goes on it, they've done their homework and they're pleased with the results. It may not be perfect, but it'll be damn close.

This is very true and I find it through personal experience with trying to "Copy" foods while living in the Philippines. If I want Miracle Whip I have to make my own with ingredients available in the Philippines and while I have created something that is passable and I like... it still will never be the original Miracle Whip.

Re: Operation bring back Dunhill tobaccos!!!!!!!

I still have a few pounds of lane bulk Dunhill My Mixture 965 but I enjoy the Comptons of Gasheils York Mixture more. They are similar but Comptons is made more true to the original than Orlik, Lane or Murrays. It is as good a tobacco you can buy for an English. Not cheap though. Its not a Dunhill copy but rather an old old recipe that is nearly the same as 965.

Comptons link: http://www.cubancigars4u.com/blends.htm

If you order York, grab some Macedonian. Its truly excellent!

Re: Operation bring back Dunhill tobaccos!!!!!!!

In my 38 years of burning tobacco in a briar bowl I have loved and lost quite a few blends...Edgeworth RR being the latest....what I have come to realize is there will always be a new blend to take it's place. This is what makes enjoying a pipe so great, namely the search for the "desert island blend". I've stopped lamenting blends that are nomore and look forward to the sampling of new tobaccos.

Now Dunhill's Baby's Bottom, that was a smoke....

Goldleaf Tobacconists in Seabrook NH had as of this weekend a great selection of Dunhill in stock. Call and ask for Joe.

Re: Operation bring back Dunhill tobaccos!!!!!!!

Reading all this commotion on Dunhill's I ran down to my local tobacconist where I remembered seeing two dusty tins of EMP and 965. Though I'm still quite the newbie, and trying to begin the exploration of the non-arros, I curiously gave it a shot. The owner didn't seem aware of thier discontinuation, and nobody here in the So Cal area is going to appreciate them, so I didn't feel guilty in releaving him of the counter space.
After catching that very strange aroma upon cracking open the tins, I've so far given Early Morning a try. It was a big leap from what I'm used to, but I did indeed enjoy it. I feel I may seal these back up for when my taste is a bit more seasoned.
Anyway, just thought I'd share my excitement in trying a "classic" and what alot of you respected smokers appreciate.

Cheers

Is that so ? For me personal I gladly count down the cost if it is good tobacco. But,...three nuns overhere is 14.50 Euro a tin. That's a lot !!

I called and they said the dunhill was "long gone". But I forgot to ask for joe. I wonder if the person with whom I spoke simply didn't want to sell the tobacco...
