Recommend me a flake/plug style tobacco

I'm interested in smoking flake tobacco. To give you a little window into my tastes regarding virgina blends, I love Fillmore, Hal O the Wynd was too nicotine heavy and tasted too much like cigarettes to me. It's a small window. What do you think?

Re: Recommend me a flake/plug style tobacco

- 1792 (very rich and full, but outstanding flavor IMO. Love/hate tobacco from my understanding)
- Escudo (it's a disc, but basically a flake. It just taste "sophisticated")
- Penzance (i know it's english but it's incredible)
- Stonehaven (very interesting smoke)
- honestly.... Vanilla Cream Flake MacBaren (great flavor for aromatic, just dry out a little)

Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake (FVF) - an outstanding VA in a rubbery flake form. Personally I prefer this one rubbed out, since the flakes can be soggy outta the tin. But with some drying, it will work with fold-n-stuff.

Reiner's Long Golden Flake (aka Blend 71) - a Burley/Perique (BurPer). Incredible stuff, comes in flakes that are like 10 inches long and 2 inches wide. Scissor out human sized flakes, stuff-n-fold, burns like a champ.

Re: Recommend me a flake/plug style tobacco

So many to mention and I've still so many yet to try. Some that come to mind are:

MacBaren's Navy Flake
Rattray's Marlin Flake (maybe too strong for you!)
I'll second Escudo
Sam Gawith's FVF
Pete's University Flake (maybe too strong for you!)
Erinmore Flake (aromatic - maybe too strong for you!)

Flakes tend to a little stronger than mixures or pre-rubbed. Sam Gawith and Gawith Hoggart make some fantastic VA based flakes and Plugs but again many have a English floral style and are quite strong. I'd say if you find Hal O wynd strong you generally like mild flakes, because it really is only medium in strength.

MacBaren rolled tobaccos, any flakes from Sam Gawith, Gawith/Hoggarth, Solani and Peter Stokkebye.
I think all the plugs/twists I've seen are from G/H or SG

There's lots to choose from

I'll jump on board and also recommend the FVF or SG Best Brown Flake

So many winners - so few losers. But, in the end, there is the old #1 - Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake. It is is an easy to rub out, easy to light VaPer Cavendish that blend runs the gamut from mildly piquant to rich, soft and muted in every bowl.

It is the Flake Master and Coin of the Realm.

What Mister Moo said. I am a fan of bullseye but prefer their lux navy flake. Good stuff.

YouTube - Flake Pipe Tobacco - how to prepare flake tobacco for filling a pipe

I currently have a sam gawith brown or Kendal flake, I would have to check my log book, I find flake tobacco to take more technique and it must be smoked slower to prevent tongue bite and dizziness, and headaches.

Mean you must be calm and relaxed for this type of smoke.

I use a cob or Kirsten mariner, considering a Kirsten full bent design or peterson system pipe for flake? Any suggestions would be very helpful..

Re: Recommend me a flake/plug style tobacco

You know, if I didn't just make a large order of tobacco myself, I'd order a few ounces of a nice stinky turd looking plug and disburse it among the curious.

My wife and I have an agreement though. I don't order tobacco constantly, and she lets me live a little longer. Every time I make an order, I say those famous words we all know. "Don't worry, this order will last me for a long while. I've got plenty of tobacco stocked up, so I'm good for a few months." I said that 2 weeks ago too, lol.
