Breaking in new pipes?

I'm aware that the smoking experience changes as the pipes get broken in, but I had some Peterson's Sherlock Holmes in a brand new cob pipe today, there was a lot of tongue bite and the bowl was kinda hot. Also I'm getting a lot of heavy smoke, doesn't always smell that nice whats that about as well?
Or is all largely attributed to maybe smoking too fast?

Re: Breaking in new pipes?

Sometimes a new cob can have an "off taste". This should go away after a couple of bowls.

As for bite, sllooowwww doowwwnnnn, LOL. This should take care of most bite problems.

Re: Breaking in new pipes?

Tongue bite + hot pipe = smoking too fast, and also because it's aromatic. Allow the tobacco to dry about 20-30 minutes before loading the pipe, and slow down on the puffing. It'll help.

Re: Breaking in new pipes?

smoking too fast and/or getting the tobacco too hot when you're lighting

Re: Breaking in new pipes?

I have seen a couple things about bite, and making sure that YOU are hydrated may help with bite. If you already are rocking a dry mouth and the only thing you have had to drink all day is coffee and a diet Coke... You might get bite you would not if you drank your 64 oz of water a day.

Re: Breaking in new pipes?

A brand new cob will sometimes have a strange taste the first few smokes, don't worry about that. As said above you're most likely puffing too fast is why it got so hot and you got a tongue bite.
