Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

Obvious to anyone on this board, the cigar smoker is the first cousin to the pipe smoker, but it's a leap that not nearly all cigar smokers make. So I was wondering, what do your cigar buddies think of your pipe smoking? Are you ever the one guy in a group of stogie smokers that's got a pipe clenched? Just curious. Discuss.

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I normally smoke cigars. I do have a couple of cheap briars that I smoke from time to time. Once in a great while I'll light up in the lounge amongst my friends. The usual reaction is something along the lines of "I'm going to have to give that a try some time."

I am viewed up on as a stud because if I am in a room full of cigar smokers and I am smoking a pipe, the women clutter around me to get away from the cigar smoke.

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I am a pipe smoker who smokes cigars from time to time. If I am smoking a cigar I don't want to be around a pipe because the smell is so different that it affects my enjoyment of the cigar. However, the cigar smoke doesn't bother me while I am smoking a pipe.

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I think you're either a cigar smoker or a pipe smoker. I'm a pipe smoker who enjoys the odd cigar. I will always prefer my pipe, but a nice cigar can equal the pleasure I have with a nice bowl. If you have the odd pipe once or twice a week but smoke a cigar 3 or 4 times a week....then IMO, you're a cigar smoker.

It seems 'dual' smokers tends to be more of an American thing, and if honest with themselves they would say they are one or the other regardless of what they smoke. To me it's a frame of mind and I think a cigarette is much closer to a cigar than a pipe. Lastly I don't like to see disapproval of ciggie smokers from either pipers or stogers...that's just elitist BS....because one thing is for sure...we're all smokers!

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I was an occasional cigar/pipesmoker from the ninetie's on... got into cigars a few years back, cigars were a little pricier than I liked, so i got into pipes and prefer my pipes over my cigars now. A good friend of mine is glad i do the pipes and cigars... He never was a fan of the flavorless cigarettes either.

Agreed......I started with cigars and found the pipe...I will smoke a cigar but won't smoke one for the sake of smoking one(it's gonna be worth it)..I am a pipe smoker.

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I would definitely define myself as a pipe smoker, although I do enjoy a stogie once every blue moon. They're a nice change of pace and a good cigar is definitely worth its own, but I just don't get as much enjoyment out of them as I do with a pipe (not to offend any cigar smokers). Perhaps its that I haven't smoked enough good cigars, or that I haven't taken enough time to appreciate the art of cigar smoking. I think however, that it's because I am simply a pipe man by nature.

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I would classify myself as a pipe smoker. I do smoke a cigar on occasion, but I was drawn to the pipe first because of cost issues. I am the bread winner of my family and raising 2 children on one income while keeping them in a good school district is expensive.

Over the last year however, I have noticed that when I do smoke a cigar, even though I enjoy them on their own merit, I find myself comparing the experience with pipe smoking and definately favor the pipe.

Lets just hope now the Obama administration and the congress don't get wind of us and add a $20 a pound tax on us as well.

I whole heartedly agree however that we as smokers, pipe, cigar or cigarette, need to stick together...we all enjoy the same leaf.

Puffing proudly,

Maboman

Re: Reactions from cigar-smoking friends?

I'm primarily a cigar smoker as are most of the crowd I run with. I seem to be the lone ranger who dabbles in smoking a pipe as well. I always seem to get very positive reactions about the pipe and longings from the others who keep promising themselves they'll buy one soon. All in all busting out the pipe often times gives the party just the extra kick it needs...
