Oops. Sorry about that, and thanks for the catch, Brian. Yeah, this is their newly formulated fuel that comes in a black can.

Mad Hatter is right, if you light the zippo and let it burn for a few seconds, it imparts little to no taste.

Cliffhanger. Yes, the zippo pipe insert has a hole in the chimney so you can hold the lighter horizontal to pull the flame through the bowl (and so that one can keep one's fingers out of the way doing so).

This be what I use, and love. Keep the combustion area CLEAN and the wick fresh and mine will light and a bowl filled with rocks!

I used to use a regular zippo (not a pipe insert) and the flame would drop down through the air-vent holes just fine. In fact I preferred that layout compared to my new pipe-insert Zippo - but oh well.

You a genius.

Not sure what's going on with the anti-zippites around here. They don't know perfection when it's burning (odorless) right under their noses.

The Ronsonol (green can?) fluid will ruin a load of baccer in one snort. The new Zippo fluid has no taste (just like me!) far as I'm concerned. The only drawback is, it can take several spins of the flint to make it light, unlike the old timey "flip open and smack it along your trouserleg" fluid. The advice given above about keeping the wick cut to a correct size is good; I always get a great flame placement over the tobacco and I have never not once zip zero ever charred a pipe rim with a Zipperoo. Anit-zippites. Who needs 'em?

Besides, like all good men, I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

I had trouble with the (then new) Zippo - it wouldn't light up on the first flick - its not the fluid. I sent it back to Zippy-doo-dah and they replaced the insert - works perfectly now. You may want to send it back - something about the spring that pushes the flint up. Stretching it a wee bit would make my (prior) insert work for a few days - but I got tired of dismantling it weekly and sent it back for replacement. Works for me!

There are some rabid anti-zippites around here. Clearly, you are one of the good people.

I did that stretchy thing once or twice and decided to live with the extra flicks. I may send mine back too.

How about this forum!? We got it all! Thanks, R'uffs.

Re: Charring light with a zippo

I've never had that problem with my zippo, it lights up on the first time. But mine was made after they came out with the new fluid. Maybe they tweaked design a little bit to work better with the new fluid

Re: Charring light with a zippo

I like any company like Zippo based in America. Buy any lighter of theirs, send it in with a note that you want a pipe lighter and they insert the pipe works and return the lighter and the original works.

FREE!

Include your email and they'll till you when it ships!

F R E E ------ I said ...........

I've bought dozens at deep discounts and send them in without even spin the wheel. Got a drawer full of pipe lighters and another drawer with the original regular insert, if they all become some collectible gee-gaw.

Also most zippo sellers will put a pipe insert in your Zippo instead of the regular one if you ask. The jewelry stores who only carry a few models for engraving might not be able to, but the tobacco stores and lighter specialty stores should. I got matching engraved zippos for me and my dad from Lighters Direct - his regular and mine with the pipe insert. Their prices are slightly higher than other online vendors but their service was execellent and I got them in less than a week.

Thanks for advice everyone. I left a little space in the top of the bowl and that did the trick. Lit right up. I've learned so much from this forum. I had been making the classic rookie mistakes of packing too tight and tamping too hard and was struggling through the bottom half of my bowls. Through this site I found out about the Frank method and looked it up you tube. That led me to other videos where I could actually see people tamping and see that you just need very light push the ashes down instead of cramming all the tobacco down. I also learned the two fingers over the top of the bowl to revive a dying pipe trick.

Now I can enjoy a whole pipe without fighting with it. I'm enjoying my first ever early morning smoke (with long johns and sweats on). It's a nice mild english blend (the only tobacco I have, fortunately it's a good morning smoke). It's a nice relaxing start to the day.

Excellent Brian!

Make sure you hit up the NST for pipe tobacco. You buy an experienced pipe smoker a tin of something he/she requests, they send you a bunch of sample baggies of different baccys from their cellar. It's a great way to try out some quality tobac and find out what you like.

On that note be wary of the Zippo dealer locator on their website. Since Tinderbox folded up shop in Vegas I'd been using Wal-Mart to get the new high-grade fuel. They are still listed as the most prominent dealer on this locator service, but the stores have STOPPED carrying anything to do with Zippo. I've been to the four closest to me and got the same story. Two said that Wal-Mart made this decision and it isn't localized.

Zippo must have refused to make the requisite discounts and kick-backs that Wally Mart requires these days.
