Red Virginia also has perique in it so I smoke it in a VA/per pipe. I'm way to early in the game to dedicate pipes to one specific blend (like I can remember anyway) but maybe with time my selections of tobacco will narrow down a bit. Right now I guess I lack self control

Yeah thanks for reminding me about the perique in it. I've only smoked it once and it was in a cob. I got my new Peterson Donegal Rocky 03 in the mail today though and I'm gonna dedicate that pipe to va/pers. I think for now, I'm just going to have a separate rotation of pipes for virginias and burleys, va/pers, latakias, aromatics, and navy blends. I'm also too early in the game to get too specific with the blends I smoke in a certain pipe although I will admit, you really get more flavor and characteristics out of a tobacco if its the only blend you smoke in a specific pipe.

Re: Ahh the pleasures of Virginias

Perique and Virginia naturally go together,it's also used in a lot of English blends.Unfortunately the real Saint James Parish parique is so rare almost all used now is imitation which is made by taking burley tobacco and fermenting it.But real perique gets it's unique flavor due to it's being a special strain of tobacco and the Saint James parish soil.

I got some perique from the Leblanc family a few years ago which are one of only two families which still make it and they only have 14 acres. I put it up in pint canning jars and mix it with virginia tobacco.

There are so many blends out there to try and so many new blends coming out, I won't live long enough to try them all. Once I get VA's, VaPers, complex, burley's, white bureys, english, balkans, orientals, fire cured, air cured, booze soaked, black cavendish, white cavendish, etc, etc, I'll be able to dedicate pipes and know what I'm doing.

Louisiana perique is alive and well.

Re: Ahh the pleasures of Virginias

Yeah thank you for posting that Hermit. It's good news to hear. There's a part in that article that says how the perique farmers are also loosing business because of the decline in pipe smokers. Well that may have been true a few years ago, but pipe smoking is slowly on the rise again, so hopefully that helps the perique farmers out as well.
