Maintaining your tinned tobacco's moisture
Alright, so I know that the safest and most reliable way to maintain the moisture content of a tinned tobacco is to transfer the tobacco into a mason jar (since the seal on the jar is better than the seal on the tin after it's cracked open). The thing is though, I like keeping my tobacco in tins. It's neatly packaged in there, often the tin designs are pretty neat, and I'm the kind of guy that likes to have a nice selection of open tobaccos to choose from. Then of course there's the fact that I would have to buy a bunch of mason jars at around $1.00 a piece depending on where I buy them.
Well I decided to look around for other solutions, and I remembered seeing a few posts a while ago that talked about putting tins in vacuum sealed bags. I thought that was a great idea, but the only vacuum bag sealer machines I'd seen were pretty pricey. The next day I was at my local supermarket and saw Ziploc vacuum bags that came with a small hand pump to suck the air out of them. The starter kit cost me about $6 and came with a pump and three quart size bags (which hold a 50gram or 2oz tin quite nicely). A box of 12 quart size bags is about $3.50 and you can also get gallon size bags which would probably be more suitable for 100gram tins. Just thought I'd share that with you guys because it's doing a great job of keeping my tinned tobaccos from drying out. ![]()

Cool! I have also used one of those big plastic bail jars like you see used as cigar humidors.Just stick the whole tin in it.Then you can stack the tins on top of another.

Re: Maintaining your tinned tobacco's moisture
What's the problem with buck mason jars that last forever? That thing looks like a gimmick to get people to pay an extra six bucks for baggies.

Well there aint no problem with using mason jars if that floats your boat. I just wanted something I could stick the tin inside that would allow minimal air movement around it, therefor minimizing moisture loss. And since this sucks all of the air out of the bag (which is pretty dang hard to do if you dont have some sort of a device to do it) it does a pretty dang good job for only a few bucks.
