So I'm going to buy some tobacco seeds

I've been looking all over the internet and this board for tobacco growing information, and think I'll give it a try. They probably won't grow, but I'm still going to try.
Anybody else grow their own?....tobacco that is.

My uncle used to grow tobacco, the hardest part is getting them started. The seeds are very tiny... like dust. You don't even bury them just mix them with some builders sand and sprinkle them in a row. You can also grow them in transplant cups then transplant them at the sign of the second leaf but you have to be very careful not to disturb the roots and no larger then at the second leafing.

After they get going they aren't much of a problem except for tobacco beatles and June bugs until it's time to pick it then you get hot sweaty sticky and stinky.

That's what I was going to do. Buy some soil, start them in small flower pots, and if they start to grow, transfer them to the garden.

Does anyone know where to get seeds besides seedman.com, newhopeseeds.com etc?

One of my Dads distant cousins grew shade wrapper in the CT valley near Deerfield, Mass. We used to visit back in the late 1950's and early 60's. I can recall the harvest in the Fall when we would visit to help out. They shaded the leaves with a thin white qauze type cloth held by poles over the growing tobacco.

There has got to be someone in that area selling seeds?? Have you tried contacting the US Dept of Agriculture??

I'm told the Amish culture grow their own tobacco. I live in PA and someone I work with said that he has seen barns full of hanging tobacco .. twisted rope ... the word is that they are pretty good at it. I actually was surprised to hear that tobacco was grown in PA ... but what do I know. Anyway, my suggestion is to ask an Amish person. I don't know where you live, but around PA (especially near Lancaster) there are Amish run bulk stores ... and they are easily found. I plan on looking for a source this summer.. just to try it out. I'm not sure they would be able to sell any ... but who knows.
