I have become better acquainted with my pipe-buying self. I can go months without seeing anything that interests me only to suddenly come upon a pipe that "speaks" to me, normally in a shape sense but sometimes in a finish sense. Once this happens I become obsessed with acquiring that pipe. Constantly looking it up, hoping that it stays "for sale" long enough for my scheming to come to fruition. I am currently in my down phase.
And of the ones that speak to you that get sold out from under you, how many do you consider "the one that got away" and think about wistfully, as opposed to the number that you promptly forget their name and existence?

I'm curious because I most often do the latter... which may mean that they didn't speak to me as clearly as I thought! In fact, the only ones I can recall right off that "got away" were a matching two-pipe set of Ser Jacopo standing pokers, one smooth and one sandblast. God, those were gorgeous pipes! Never seen anything like 'em. I can only console myself with thoughts of perhaps them being unbalanced or bad smokers.

Ok, so how come the smallest breeze will blow out a match when I'm trying to light my pipe but when the same match is about to burn my fingers all the shaking in the world won't put it out.

It's the same phenomenon that says, to wit, wearing a nice shirt to a spaghetti restaurant will result in a major stain that will not happen to that old flannel.

Or... when you're in a hurry, you hit all the lights red. You catch green lights only when you're attempting to kill time.

There's a name for this phenomenon, I'm sure!
