This Morning's Smoke

As I closed my eyes last evening and drifted off to sleep, I thought about how nice is a Friday night, with the work week behind me, and the whole weekend before. I was looking to sleep-in on Saturday and catch-up on some well-deserved-sleep. Friday had been a beautiful Spring day in western PA and as such, I decided to leave the window and shade open in my bedroom, to allow some nice fresh, sweet Spring night air into the house, while I slept.

At 6AM, I was awakened to the calls of robins, cardinals, turkeys and other assorted sounds of Spring. The sun was beginning its rise and my whole bedroom seemed like an extension of nature, calling me out of my slumber. As I climbed out from under the toasty covers, a chill filled my room and my body, and the sweet smell of my flowering crabapple tree overtook the shock from the bite of the cool air.

Downstairs, I opened the shades and a few windows, and suddenly, the whole living space filled with the splendor of early morning light. I grabbed a bag of my Starbucks Pikes Place Blend and went about the task of brewing a pot of coffee. With coffee in hand and briar in the pocket, I opened the back sliding door, and went out on my patio. The sun was shining on half of the red omnistone patio as I sat down and put my feet up on the adjacent chair. As I sipped on my fresh brewed cup-o-joe, I contemplated the wonder of Spring, with trees and bushes and ground cover beginning their annual greening. My backyard blends into the woods and some deer were meandering around, with white tails waving as they headed towards their bedding grounds. Soon the woods shall thickin and these beautiful creatures will be hidden from my view.

The feeders were filled the night before and I was blessed by a steady stream of song birds. Woodpeckers were pounding away as they do, excavating nesting cavaties and feasting on bugs. It felt so wonderful, to be alive and to have vision and hearing, to experience all that was happening around me. And oh yes, my morning smoke...I reached down and brought forth my bent-briar, wooden matches as well as my JM Boswell's Berry Cobler Tobacco. As I opened the sealed glass jar of baccy, that exquisite smell of berry cobler enlightened yet another of my senses. And so I began the filling of the pipe, trying to pack it up just right, so as to ensure a nice, smooth and lengthy smoke. The wind was light as I struck the match, and with a crack, it was lit and flame appeared. As I placed the fire around my well-filled bowl and began to puff, that wonderful odour of a freshly lit aromatic filled my mouth and the surrounding air. With feet still propped and coffee still hot, I sipped on both pipe and cup, cherishing this moment in time. The pipe required little attention, a rarity for this noob, as I sat and contemplated the beauty of God's creation and the changing of the seasons. For some forty minutes, it was I and my pipe, pondering the day as a child, considering all of the possibilities for this wonderful morning...

Great story! I've had an incident similar to that. I enjoy waking up before sunrise and hiking to the top of the hill behind my house. From there I can see the entire valley and I'll watch the sunrise as I puff on a pipe. It's wonderful. Congrats on having such a great experience!

Re: This Morning's Smoke

Quit rubbing it in. I've had a head cold since Tuesday that seems to keep getting worse and worse every day. I can't taste a thing and smoking doesn't even sound pleasant. Basically, I can't smoke, taste food, or drink, so I don't know what the purpose of God keeping me on this green earth is right now. And it doesn't help that today is absolutely beautiful here in CT. Ahhh, the joys of dating a nurse . . . .

Sounds like my life this past week (except for the dating a nurse part... not doing that). Been absolutely miserable. I've been wanting to smoke, but just haven't felt like it since Wednesday. I've got some tobaccos just sitting on my dresser begging me to smoke them, but I cant.

Re: This Morning's Smoke

Wan't enjoying a smoke the wife was in the vehicle with me (we commute together), looked in the rear view as we were climbing the largest hill and I could see the sunrise beginning to reflect off the snow covered mountain tops making them orange with Washington lighting up the most.
Thats why I love NH.

I smoked a Camel non filter cig and drank black French Roast coffee—lots of nicotine and cafene. I can't pack a pipe at 4 AM

A man can rarely spoil himself more than having a nice easy pipe in the morning...particularly on a sunny spring morning...it's always Pete's Sherlock Holmes for me.

That is true. Unfortunately I must be at work at 7 AM and here in the Southeast the sun is not shining. But Sherlock Holmes is one of my faborites

Great story, I'm envious! I wish I had time before work to sit and enjoy life. My mornings are such a rush I can't wait until they are over. I have to look forward to my weekends for a nice, relaxing early morning smoke.
