it's not steel wool, it's grill cleaner pads called Char-Boy. i'm not trying to poke fun, just trying to save you the experience of smoking wool.

brass or steel screens seem like the best answer IMHO. if you get them from a plumbing supply store, be sure to burn off the coating they have on them b4 smoking thru them. window screen cut to fit would also work, or you could just get them from a head shop.

you have to remember too that cobs need a slightly different technique than smoking briar, mainly because of the WAY open draw left by the filter space. the bottom of the bowl also tends to be lower than the draught hole, making it more likely to suck up embers. drawing harder at the bottom to relight makes it even worse.

since you don't really want cake in a cob in the 1st place, i just sacrifice & don't smoke the last few bits (it's just dottle anyhow). not a perfect solution but it works.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Maybe you're sucking too hard. Sorry had to say it LOL.

I picked up a cob a couple weeks ago and have put maybe 30 bowls through her thus far and really enjoy the cob. I've only had one fleck of tobacco fly into my mouth and it was upon light up. I've been paranoid of what you describe with all my pipes since I started so I may just draw a little easier than most though. With my cob I always smoke till only ash and a very small amount of coal remains. My suggestion is just sip towards the bottom not puff (if that makes sense).
