DANGIT! (cob issue)

...this is the third time since I started smoking corncob pipes that I've had a burning tobacco fragment fly up through the pipe and into my mouth. This last one landed right on my tonsils.

Now I fully understand why MM made all their pipes to be filter pipes...this frickin hurts!

SO, any of you MM smokers...what fixes besides filters have you folks tried?

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

I usually don't smoke my cobs all the way to the bottom because im paranoid of sucking in burning embers, the airway is huge.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Try a filter adapter to make the hole the same size as a normal pipe: Savinelli 6mm to Non-Filter Adapter - pip62nf

Or I've recently started using balsa filters in my cobs and Grabows and really like them, but they do absorb some nicotine.

I guess I'm just lucky cause I've never had that problem. I don't usually smoke all the way to the bottom either so that might be why...

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Get a pipe with a curved instead of straight stem will help as well

I've tried to smoke with various filters, but it seems like it makes the draw so much more difficult that it isn't really worth it for me. I don't like a lot of nicotine, and in fact would be happy with a tobbacco that had none in it. For me, the nic is the only downside to the smoking experience. I really enjoy the tastes, aromas, and aesthetics of the experience. Perhaps I'll give the balsa filters a go in my cob, as I haven't tried them yet.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Thanks for all the advice folks, a screen will be installed as soon as I can get to Home Depot and buy a bunch...and some superglue.

One of my MMs is a bent stem, the other is a curved stem...I'm not really a fan of straight cobs...to me, the curved/bent stems are far easier on the eyes.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

I'd advise against the superglue idea. That stuff will put off some fumes when burned and I'm sure it isn't good for you if not infact harmful. You can buy pre-cut screens that will fit your cobs, if that is your choice. Personally, it sounds like you're simply puffing to hard on the pipe, especially near the bottom of the bowl. Just my $0.02.

I'm a drooler so paper/charcoal filters usually clog up on me before I can finish a smoke. I haven't noticed any reduced draw or flavor with the balsa filters, I think the smoke flows around them rather than through them. And they supposedly absorb a good deal of tar and nicotine.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Wow I've never had this happen. I've had a little piece of tobacco come up just inside my mouth a time or two but not a HOT one by any means. Not sure how hard you're puffing that pipe??? lol

I'd say if you dont smoke all the way to the very bottom you'll avoid this.

Re: DANGIT! (cob issue)

Good point, having a hot coal end up in your mouth has to be a rarity, the fix could be as simple as puffing more gently.

But,being a former cop I got an idea though an unorthodox one. The crackheads use brillo steel wool as filters in their crack pipes. (the kind without soap)

I wonder if that might help your problem as to a filter?

What he said. Mind your filling method, quit while you're ahead and don't draw so hard.

Screens? Filters? Superglue? I am not sure if I'm more concerned for your health or your technique.
