Shocking Cob experience

I went on a fishing and golfing trip with my brothers this weekend. I bought a couple of corn cob pipes to take along figuring the smoke would be OK. I didn't want to lose any of my briars (I lose a lot of things including my dignity on these trips ...)

Anyway, I had some of the best smokes ever! I couldn't believe it. Right off the bat, they were fantastic - no break in - no nothing. I don't know if it was because of the cob material or the relatively small bowl... I'm just so excited - and they only cost $5. I got Missouri Meerschaums.

I'm going to buy some more and dedicate 1 to almost every type of tobacco I have. I don't know how long they last, but I think they are a great option. You should try one.

I'm very pleasantly surprised! Just wanted to share.

Re: Shocking Cob experience

I recently got a few of their nicer ones with the hardwood bottoms. Their chambers are about the size of a normal briar, if not slightly larger, and they've got pretty thick walls. The stems on them, while still plastic, seem to be a bit more durable than on the Legends. They're a nice, easy, cool smoke. So far I've only smoked Half & Half in them though.

Welcome the the wonderful world of Cob Pipes!!

There are many who turn their nose up to the lowly cop pipe but looks like you've found the secret to it all. Missouri Meerschaums, IMHO, make some of the best, and as you stated the price is simply fantastic. They will last a looooooong time if you take care of them. I have several and find myself smoking them more than my briars. I don't dedicate them for any particular tobacco as I mostly smoke VA's and Burleys. Cleaning is simple also, just wad up a papertowel and gently but firmly twist it into the bowl after each smoke or as often as possible and run a cleaner through the stem and shank.... All done.

I've got a couple of the smaller MMs and I'm honestly not that big of a fan of them. I mean they smoke really well, but I find they have a really funny taste to them. I suppose that might go away after several bowls, but I can't bring myself to smoke out of them because of it.

Re: Shocking Cob experience

I recently bought a MM cob from Walgreens and really like it. I highly recommend a cob to anyone that has not tried one yet.

During the first few minutes on the first bowl I did notice an odd flavor but that quickly disappeared and have not noticed it since.

MM Cobs are fine. I have several. The only thing I do not like about them is the plastic stems. Also on bents, the stems are prone to break, but one can buy replacements for one dollar. I have not noticed a “funny” taste. I primarily smoke aromatics in mine.

Re: Shocking Cob experience

I am a cob fan too. They are ,for lack of a better term, easier to smoke than a briar. You can pack it most any sort of way and get away with it. Almost always a dry smoke as well. I do tend to enjoy the "experience" a little more with a good briar. I am sure that is due to the asthetics, but for a great low maintanance smoke it is hard to beat a cob. All beginners should have a few good cobs.

Thats exactly how I feel about them. They seem to taint the smoke in some way and I really don't like it. I have had two or three new ones now thinking I just got a bad one or something but they were all awful. Like you say, this taste may fade with use but I really can't bring myself to smoke them enough times to see

They have a sweet taste at first.
IT'S CORN.
I smoke mine whenever I'm out in the wind, riding the
John Deere and anytime I don't want to risk a good pipe.
I even light em with a torch.

Re: Shocking Cob experience

Well I've been smoking my cobs a lot lately trying to break them in more and I have found that the funny taste I was getting has subsided. I've been smoking Amphora full aroma in them exclusively. I guess just being so used to briars cobs were a bit of a change for me. I'll keep these around for when I'm working around the house.

Re: Shocking Cob experience

As a very new pipe smoker I decided to pick up a couple cobs, just some generic ones from a little smoke shop. They really do smoke quite well for the price! I think the walls are a little more absorbant than briar, so that helps them not get as wet. It seems like you can really smoke anything through them and not have any problems.

I'll have to pick up a MM on ebay though. They look pretty cool.

There's a good chance the ones you got in your smokeshop were MM, they're the only company who makes 'em in the US. Take a look at the ones you got and see if they look like any of the models here: Missouri Meerschaum
