Noobie tins?

Heya folks, going to head to habana smoke shop this weekend which some of you know as pipesandcigars.com and was going to try my first tin. The problem is I have no clue what I should get. I do like, nay, love the aromatics. Any help here is greatly appreciated.

It's not in a tin, but I'd highly suggest their Butternut Burley, comes in bulk. Excellent for the aromatic lover.

Also, if you want a tin, see if they have Peterson't Sherlock Holmes or Sunset Breeze. Both are winners.

And, might I say, lucky damn dog for being able to "head" over there instead of having to go to the internet!!

Re: Noobie tins?

Personally I would pick up several samples of bulk tobaccos...Hearth and Home makes some good things...Anni. Kake for one is a favorite. McClellands makes some great Virginias. Have you tried 5100, Red Cake? ..excellent. Hearth and Home has some good Aromatics. Maybe some Stonehaven if they have it in small bulk. The list is endless.

If you're new to tobaccos, I'd go with a bunch of 1-2 oz. bulk samples and forget the tins until I see what blends I favor.

I 2nd ...Hermit's suggestion. Don't dare leave without picking up some of that Butternut Burley!

Have fun!

Re: Noobie tins?

Thanks guys. Yes I have tried quite a bit of the bulk , really from all over the taste spectrum. Like I said I really like the aromatics and probably dislike the latakia type the most. If this is like anything else I have gotten into I am sure that will be reversed in a couple years. Scottie actually packaged up a few bulks this past weekend for me to try, one called trout stream is exceptional but again thats an aromatic.

I have not tried any of the bulks you suggested so will make sure I pick them up this weekend.

Trout Stream is very similar to Butternut Burley. I'd almost say that it's the same topping, but with burley tobacco in, well, the Butternut Burley.

Anniversary Kake is also a classic that must not be passed up, but chances are you've already been given that.

They have a new blend called Classic Burley Kake that is like Carter Hall or Prince Albert, but in a cake form and amped up a bit. Good for an all day smoke, or for someone who wants to learn the mechanics of smoking without having to worry about the tobacco.

Re: Noobie tins?

These guys are messing with you. Most of these tobaccos are WAY too strong for the unexperienced. Typical newbie hazing. It's shameful, really.

These tobaccos are much more suitable for somebody without a lot of experience:

Peterson Irish Flake
Samuel Gawith Black XX Twist
Gawith, Hoggarth & CO Dark Birdseye

Re: Noobie tins?

Heh, thanks but too strong is really not doable. I have put things in these lungs that....well, thats a story for another day.

Again, many thanks for all the suggestions.

Hey Viking, need to speak with you in private, but you can't get PM's yet. If you would, send me a quick email to wwhermit@gmail.com so I can contact you. It's about your trip to Habana's.

Re: Noobie tins?

Again, thanks for the many replies here. Just to let those that replied know, I did purchase a tin for the first time today. Last week I went with more bulks, getting 2 ounces of 7-8 differrent flavors and did the same today. I went with Sherlock Holmes and was pretty excited to pop the tin when I got home.
Having popped the tin it smelled great but was real wet. I know you are supposed to let it dry. If any care to reply to this, what are the guidelines for drying out tinned bacca? Just enough for a bowl or do you dry the whole tin?
Smoking a wet bowl of SH now I must say...this is very, very smooth and the taste is incredible! Unique though from all the bulks I have tried up to this point. I am looking forward to trying another...probably the sunset breeze as wwhermit had suggested.
I did pick up the butternut burley last weekend also. That is quite good also and has turned into my all day smoker. So smooth and the folks around me just love the room note.

I've smoked a pipe for years and I wouldn't smoke Black XX even with a death wish! There are far more painless (and quicker) ways to die than to suffer through that stuff. Bleah!

Re: Noobie tins?

Well now you guys really have me wanting to try some tobacco that ends with XX...heh. I am a new pipe smoker but I have smoked cigarettes, around 2 packs a day for 20+ years. Unfortunately I still smoke a bit but am now down to around 2 packs a week and want to cut that out entirely.
The plan was to cut it out cold turkey and just jump to the pipe but it seems that a lot of the aromatics I loved did not really have the N content I craved and still do. I went with a few bulks aimed at the ex smokers, one being sunza bitches and that has helped tremendously as evil cigarettes do not even enter my mind when I finish a bowl.

All that being said I would not mind trying some of the stronger tobaccos...maybe not to be savored as much as say a rasberry delite but they have their place, for me anyway.

Re: Noobie tins?

Black XX Rope, Black XXX Rope, Brown Rope #4, or Black Irish Twist would be in one bowl the equivalent of two packs of Chesterfield Kings, the old original unfiltered ones. Well, except that you would have run off every living thing within one-quarter mile of your exhausts .....

On the upside, insects will avoid you for the next one to two weeks ...

Go ahead, try it ................... make our day! ;-)

For a couple of very good smokes that have plenty on Vitamin "N", give C&D's Old Joe Krantz and GL Pease's Haddo's Delight a try! These should satisfy that craving, without being over done!
