It can take a lifetime (or two) with pretty much chain smoking a meer to get that dark chocolate color.

I read somewhere that rich folks in the olde days would pay their employees (slaves) to smoke their new meers. Then they would display it on their mantle and gaze wistfully at it while sipping on champagne.

Its more fun to smoke the thing than worry about its color

Yeah, I think if you want a nice petina you'll either have to smoke it in a smokebox, buy an antique or get yourself some slaves

You can always accelarate the process by putting the pipe in a mason jar, blow smoke into it, and seal it up. Do that several times a day.

Re: meerschaum coloring?

I have a thin-walled meerschaum I got for Christmas, I was able to see some color in two months with just moderate smoking. Just look at the coloring as a bonus, you dont need to have a rotation of pipes, and they dont ghost flavors... mostly. Just try not to let the flame touch the outside of the bowl, it leads to sudden outbursts of cursing.

I have one meerschaum. Frankly, I am not nuts about them. I smoke it rarely.

That's an interesting tip. I'm looking forward to getting my new meer and giving it a go.

Our experience is that the overall coloration is caused more by the stone than the tobaccos. For the most part, the color direction your pipe takes can't be controlled but you can control how dark it gets.

We like to say that you shouldn't be a slave to coloring your pipe, just enjoy it!
