Good Perique Blends?

I'm looking to try some blends that have perique in them. I think there's a FM blend that has perique, but other than that I don't know of any. Anyone know of any good perique blends?
I'd also prefer if it was the "real" stuff from down south, but the "imitation" perique would be fine as well. Is there really much of a difference?

Re: Good Perique Blends?

Almost everything by GLP........... lol

SG - St James Flake, McClellenad - St James Woods, McConnell - Scottish Cake and Red Virginia, PS - Luxury Bullseye Flake just to name a few

I would say that St James Flake and Limerick Treasures of Ireland are probably the only ones I'll keep around long term because I like the way the flavors are melded together

Re: Good Perique Blends?

Fillmore from G.L. Pease is my very favorite. It's got fig, pepper, and creamy notes in SPADES. Luxury Bullseye is solid, but needs age to calm down the hay notes in the Virginias - it's also an excellent bulk buy. But I find myself reaching for Fillmore every time, easily over Escudo.

Re: Good Perique Blends?

Cornell and Deli Mississippi Mud Has a nice dose of perique. Starts off with a latakia blast however. Tin lasts only a few days here. LOL.

Ohhh... Thank you for pointing that out. Now I have to pick out one to try. The blackpoint blend looks interesting, might have to call the B&M and see what they have.

Might have to give this one a try as well... I do like latakia (and I just realized it is not pronounced lah-tea-kah like I've been saying it...)

Thanks for the replies all... Definantly some more to try should I find that I like perique!

Good list. Is there actually such thing A a BAD perique? It seems to be more or less subtle depending on the blend but I never considered perique, per se, good or bad.

One can purchase perique for blending (or for punching up an existing blend). A few pinches here and there will make it quite clear what perique is and what it does to other tobaks. I have over-added and it can take away the nuance that, for me, makes a "hint" of perique interesting

No, but there are certainly "perique blends" I don't care for. Some blends seem to me to be "perique dumps" where the blender just decided to put in more spice than substance. I think I prefer a little more than a hint but nothing overwhelming. I find Dunhill Elizabethan shading the "hint" side (but still excellent), GLP Fillmore to be overwhelming and McClellands St James Woods or Bayou Slices to be just right. So I wouldn't consider Fillmore to be "bad", but it certainly doesn't entertain my personal taste buds. We'll see how it does in a year, as the remainder of the tin is in a mason jar in my cellar.

Re: Good Perique Blends?

Fillmore is one that comes to mind... but honestly the only blend that i've really liked w/ Perique in it is Escudo... and that's some mighty fine stuff

Yes, there is no such thing as BAD perique. Can that be smoked straight out of the tin?

I have done both andTabasco is way better on its own. (And, if you call Tabaso hot, it is true that milk products take the heat away from hot peppers.) I am not sure why perique, with its special character, exists - never read the history of the strain. I wonder if it was a good straight smoke back in the day.
