Yeah, maybe the problem is in the pipe, not the baccy... maybe the stem or shank has developed some kind of mold or something.

I have 3 briars and one meerschaum. I have one Bjarne, Stanwell, and a basket pipe for the briars. They all came with a carbonized bowl as well. With aromatics (the ones Ive tried at least) literally within the first few puffs I get this odd pinching headache that wont go away if I continue to smoke. So since Im buying tobacco, I pretty much have avoided any aromatic one cause I dont want to waste my money. Ive tried the some of the bulk aromatics at my BM store, and also some captain cool and mellow mack by Mcclelands, all give the headache.

Virginians that dont give me those range from blackwoods flake, redcake, HH mature virginian, anniversary kake, best brown flake, and others. THanks for your help too!

Chris, email sent to your address, Ill try to send out tin today or tomorrow depending on when I receive your address!

Thanks all, Mighty (Mike)

Re: Tin of Sam Gawith Full Virginian Flake

Arrived on Saturday Mike. Thanks again and keep and eye on your mailbox!

For all: this is my first experience with a tobacco that is in this state, (thin sheets).

I tried to crumble, rub, it out and it did come apart some but was difficult to fill my pipe with. It was still very stiff and almost like filling your pipe with small twigs. The tobaccos I've dealt with are either in strips or cube cut and very soft, Is there a technique I should be using with this type of baccy or a better method to rub them out? BTW, the smoke was very pleasant, with no headache as Mighty had experienced, but I had to relight often. I'm pretty sure the relights were because of the uneven consistency with how the bowl was filled.

Chris, glad it came early! For rubbing out the type of tobacco that is FVF, I usually set some out to dry for a good 30 minutes, then roll it into a little ball and rub it with my hands, almost like when you rub your hands together when they are cold. Hope that makes sense. You can keep repeating the rubbing method to achieve the crumble that you want, but it does help if the baccy is dried a little, also for the smoke as well.

Re: Tin of Sam Gawith Full Virginian Flake

Tried the "roll" method last night and it worked really well. I ended up rubbing it out to a consitency that was very fine. Filled the bowl and lit her up. I had to relight twice throughout the 1 hour smoke. This was my first flake and first full Virginia tobacco and I really liked it. It had good flavor and I can't really place the flavor other than just a nice pure tobacco taste. It was a good change of pace. It's also stronger than what I'm used to. Towards the end of the bowl I was getting a little buzz, but not a buzz like when I smoked my first cigarette at 15 years old when I thought I would puke. This was more of a slight light headiness and somewhat dissoriented feeling, (very relaxing). It was nice. I started to think maybe Mighty put something extra in this for me LOL. Anyway, I'll definitely be picking up a few tins of this. I reckon I should put a couple away to age.

BTW Mike - I gave my wife a package to mail earlier this week and thought she had taken it to the Post Office, but she used UPS. They said it should be to you on Tuesday!

Re: Tin of Sam Gawith Full Virginian Flake

Chris, glad that you were able to get it rolled out for a nice smoke. I have heard that Sam Gawith's Best Brown Flake is very similar to FVF without as much nicotine kick, if you are looking for something a little more mild.

Also, Im looking forward to Tuesday! It will be a nice little surprise.

Let it age a bit more. Its good stuff. I have several tins of it and I use it to blend some mixtures. Very top rated Virginia tobacco

Re: Tin of Sam Gawith Full Virginian Flake

I initially got headaches from Dunhill MM. However, after my nicotine tolerance went up (again ... I had not smoked much in many years)... the headaches went away. Now I smoke FVF, 1792, and Sliced Brown twist with not a touch of headache. Also, try making sure you are not smoking on an empty stomach. When I used to get headaches .. they were worse when my blood sugar was low. FWIW.

Anyways, it looks like Hendu was first in line, and then SteveB. Also if someone has any info or thoughts regarding headache thing, feel free to offer them.

Ill keep just a couple of flakes, as that will leave almost the full tin for Hendu or SteveB to try out. Right now Im smoking blackwoods flake, redcake, and anniversary cake without any headaches. As mentioned Best Brown flake doesn't give me them either, nor any natural perique blends ive tried.

Hendu, since I cant do PM's yet, post an email where I can get your address. Read up on the blend and see if its something you might like, and if not Ill try SteveB.

Thanks, Mighty

Hey Chris! I got your package this morning! What a nice surprise, that pipe stand is really neat. I did not have anything like it and it fits my pipes very nicely. Now I can at least claim some organization with my pipe mess, and that should buy some points with the wife.

Thanks again man!

Not a problem Mike. You just happened to make your offer at the right time. I was just finishing up a 6-pipe rack and didn't really have room for the 3-pipe rack. Hopefully it goes well with your decor. Enjoy!
