Peterson recommendations?
On Sunday, I am going to be checking out a B & M in my area that I have never been to. They have Peterson tins for about $1-2 cheaper than what Smokingpipes and 4 noggins are selling them for. I was thinking of picking up 2 to 3. Unfortunately, this is the only brand that they have available. Here on the flavors that they have:
Sweet Killarney Irish Oak Luxury blend Sunset Breeze Old Dublin Sherlock Holmes Irish Whisky Connoisseurs Choice Gold Blend Irish Flake University Flake Any recommendations on these? I've checked tobaccoreviews, but I would like to know what you guys think. Lately, I have been smoking Virginia, English & Vaper's. Aromatics have not done much for me, but maybe I just haven't had a good one. I have tried Captain Black White, generic black Cavendish, and Vanilla, all of which didn't have much flavor to me. I've heard mixed things about Peterson, but they have them for a very good price.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Iīve only smoked Old Dublin, Univ. Flake and Irish Oak.
Old Dublin is a good english. Itīs simple, creamy and smoky... itīs worth a try. I find Univ. Flake a little harsh on the throat, although not so high in nicotine. It has a blueberry flavor that some folks enjoy a lot. Irish Oak is hard to describe... itīs a little ashy, kind of leathery, salty, with a generous amount of perique and many different nuances down the bowl... I didnīt love it. Iīm rather curious about Sherlock Holmes, though. |

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Is it just me, or is Peterson's the one tinned tobacco that every B&M carries. Their salesmen must be running circles around the other guys.
I'm kind of interested in this too as my sister told me she's buying my Dad a Peterson pipe for his birthday. He currently smokes cheap cigars (like I think the last time I smoked with them it was Cuban Sandwiches) on weekends with his buddy from up the road; my mom calls them a couple of old women because they get together and gab every weekend. P.S. Shhhh... don't tell the guys on the cigar forum, but if I'm smoking a cigar I usually like those cheapo ones with some good company more than an expensive cigar.

I'd love to hear more on this also, as I've been looking to purchase some Sunset Breeze and Sherlock Holmes.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
I really like irish flake, university flake is pretty good too. Gold blend is decent enough for an aromatic. Those are all I've tried, my B&M had "samples" of other tins open and all of the others smelled too goopy or just didn't pique my interest.
Irish flake is the winner of the lot, IMHO. Totally smokable right out of the tin with no age or drying out necessary. No casings, no frills. Just good, strong tobacco with plenty of vitamin N. |

I was thinking either Sherlock Holmes (if I go the natural route) or Connoisseur's Choice (if I go with an aromatic) for my Dad who's never smoked a pipe before

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Cool, Brian. Thanks for the heads-up. Maybe I'll try finding a sampler of Sunset before thinking about getting a tin. I'll also start looking at Connoisseur's Choice.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Two tins of Sherlock Holmes and 1 tin of University Flake...if you like aromatics....add a tin of Sunset Breeze...and if you like Latakia, add a tin of Old Dublin.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
I gave Peterson backies a try and ordered a tin of sunset breeze, and... it has been sitting on the desk for months now.. I suppose it's very personal and subjective what you smoke, but from my point of view, SB is a simple aromatic with no nic whatsoever. It burns ok, but the supposedly amaretto flavour is more woody to me than amaretto. And 0 nicotine kick.
I only smoke it when I want to smoke pipe but don't want nicotine, and so SB comes in use once in every couple of months or so.. I suppose i want to try Old dublin and sherlock holmes, however, my first impression of Pete backies is vague.. I love my pete pipe though! |

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Sherlock Holmes is splendid. I only wish I could find its identical twin at a reduced price. My only suggestion is to leave a small amount out to air dry before you smoke it. It is a bid damp in the tin. I put a small amount out in the evening so it is ready to smoke the next day, this seems to make for a drier and cooler smoke. Whatever you do, be sure to give Sherlock Holmes a try.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
My sister ended up getting a Peterson Aran 03 (a bent apple) with a tin of Peterson Irish Whiskey and a tin of Two Friends Celtic Mist for my dad. I really need to remind my sister that our heritage is Italian, not Irish
![]() This is all coming together splendidly. Without any prior coordination with my sister, I got my dad a new humidor for his birthday. So he's going to get hooked up on both ends of the smoking spectrum. Plus I'm going home at the end of May; I was already planning on giving my dad a pipe kit and teaching him how to smoke then. Now he'll have all the accessories he needs and a little bit of experience when my sister gives him the pipe for his birthday. Plus my sister already got me a Peterson Aran bent billiard with a saddle bit (shape 221 maybe?) for my birthday when she was in Ireland so now my dad and I will have very similar pipes. And I got him an engraved Zippo that matches mine for Fathers Day so my dad and I are going to be like twins. If he sticks with the pipe I might have to get him a pipe insert for the Zippo.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
Thanks everyone! This has really helped to make my decision easier. I also just remembered that Dub has a video about Peterson pipes and baccy, which was also very informative.
YouTube - Peterson's tobacco and pipes Right now, I'm thinking of getting Sherlock Holmes, Irish Flake, and University Flake. Old Dublin sounds good, but I also have an unopened tin of Squadron leader waiting to be smoked.

Re: Peterson recommendations?
The B&M by me only carries McClellands... interestingly enough, I've yet to purchase any of it.
