P-lip style mouthpiece

Hi all, Ive been thinking about getting a Peterson online, but it has a P-lip mouthpiece. I like to put a rubber mouthpiece on the end of my pipes and am not sure if I would be able to do this effectively with a P-lip style.

Anything else I should know about the P-lip styles?

Thanks again for your help!

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

I can't say about the rubber thingie on a P-lip.

I can say I like my Petes and that those dang P-lippers are a love-hate kind of thing with a few magical folks in the middle who claim they can take it or leave it in a real neutral, evenhanded way. (I think they're trying to fool themselves into thinking they like it when they really don't.)

You like it or you don't and that's that. I don't. Poo-ik. P-lip. Feh.

WTH? Ask the Mayor. He's from Dublin and is totally unbiased about innovation from Ireland, I am sure.

Ok, so the only way for my to find out if I can handle the P-lip is to commit and buy a pipe with a 50/50 chance at liking it? Maybe I should stick with the fishtail...

Thanks, Mike

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

I bought my pete 303 a couple of weeks ago and I loved the p-lip from the first smoke! I normally clench my bent pipes between teeth, and for that reason even a regular mouthpiece is directed to the upper part of my palate due to gravity, and the p-lip does the job even better! Personal preference obviously.

I don't see any reason a rubber bite grip wouldn't work on a P-lip. I've got two of them and clench them all the time while smoking. P-lips are good for variety.

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

The rubber mouthpiece thingys will work just fine - just push it down a little more towards the shank to keep the hole open. It's the P-lip itself that you have to worry about. As Moo said, some people like them and some don't. They feel weird to me and they tend to choke the draw a little more than I like. But that's a subjective response - you may like them.

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

I'm a P-lip liker. If I were buying another Peterson I'd get the P-lip if it were available in the style I was buying, but I don't like it so much that I wouldn't refrain from buying a certain style if the retailer only had the fishtail available.

When I was using softy bits I had one on my P-lip for a little while, worked fine but it does fit a little different than on a standard pipe.

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

I don't normally clench a pipe, but I really prefer the P-lip when I do need to clench and need both hands free. I find it easier to hold in my teeth than a fishtail.

Re: P-lip style mouthpiece

I don't care for the PLip. It seems to focus the smoke stream in a small spot on the upper plate. YMMV. I think you can get replacement stems for around 15 - 20 bucks
