Hey, I was just wondering is there any functional advantage to a fancy tamper over a plain old pipe nail?
And while we're on it, what's the "scooper" on my Czech tool supposed to be used for? The other night I used it to mix up some pipe mud, other than that I sometimes dig out dottle with it but the poker works just as well for that task.

Brian the scooper is very handy in situations where you need to clean unsmoked tobacco/ash from a hot bowl. The long pin looking part of the tool helps to free the air passage through the tobacco if it gets to congested and also can be used to clear clogs in the barrel or stem. To me its just handy to have all on one tool but Im sure a nail works great.


Also to answer your earlier exspresso tamp question. The whole idea behind a great cup/shot of expresso is to force hot water at high pressure through a very tightly packed amount of dark roasted , very fine grounded coffee which is packed into a little basket with very small drain holes on the bottom (called a Porta filter). If the process is done right a very wonderful light brown extract forms on the top of the black brew called crema. Very wonderful indeed. Ahh Espresso

I just now invented the term "porta-tamper". It implies a pipe tamper with good portability characteristics - lightweight, easy to wipe clean and no sharp point to stick a hole in your trousers or flesh. The official eternal mayoral tamper is solid brass, somewhat large and quite heavy and not particularly easy to wipe clean - it is more of a porch-, auto- or den tamper. It is not likely to travel day-to-day with the user.

Agreed! Besides being handy to remove unburned tobacco, it work great as a scooper for snuff. Just make sure no ash is on it. I bet MacGyver wished that he had a Czech tool.
