Thoughts on my pipe design
I've been admiring the premise of a double-bowled pipe for awhile, but I've yet to see one that didn't look overly goofy or gimmicky. I was trying to think of a traditional shape that could aesthetically AND functionally support a second bowl, and I struck on the interesting and underrated cavalier shape. Its unique drilling would allow for both excellent smoking characteristics, and would look like a whimsical take on a natural old-world shape.
Like a long canadian, one would need a large chunk of briar to carve this, and it's well beyond my capabilities, but I was thinking of commissioning it. I figure a smart rusticated finish would be best as the odds are against such an involved shape showing great grain over both bowls. ![]() Art used from here: ASPipes > Shapes Chart

Re: Thoughts on my pipe design
You might have tar build up or even staining on the outside of the upper bowl from the burning tobacco in the lower bowl but that's the only negative I can offer

Re: Thoughts on my pipe design
You need a way to plug up the unused bowl. Or else your draw will pull air from the least resistance (i.e. empty bowl). A cork may do the trick

Re: Thoughts on my pipe design
I envision smoking both bowls at once - really showing off the skill to keep a pipe going. The draw may not be equalized, but it would be enough to keep two bowls puffing along, I think. Although, I have seen some very finely crafted briar bowl caps that would work if your idea was to smoke one at a time.

Re: Thoughts on my pipe design
That is something where I would load both bowls and cycle back and forth plugging the bowls with the palm of my hand. That way, I could puff twice as fast without overheating the baccy.

Re: Thoughts on my pipe design
I guess my first question would be why? Just to be unique? Is there another purpose I am missing? If it is for a longer smoke I have seen and own some very large bowled pipes.
With that said, as for the staining/burning issue what if you reversed the bowls so one was on each side of the stem? then the lower bowl would not char the upper. |
