All of them?

I can't resist, see tin, pop tin. Like a chimp on a banana plantation, peel 'em all.

Usually a dozen or more open "containers" at any given time.

Re: How Many Open Tins?

I guess I am just worried about things drying out. I have a bunch of tins on the way and was wondering if it was safe to open them to try them out and then closing them again and leaving them for a bit.

Really depends on the type of tin. MacBarrens seal up pretty good. I have learned to put SG tins witin a baggie as I do not smoke them all right away. McClelland have a lid that seals.

Re: How Many Open Tins?

I usually have 2 tins open at one time but I also have a tobacco bar which has 14 bulk blends in glass jars. The jars have rubber seals but are not airtight and the tobacco does dry out over time. I tested the seal with several different types of blends and they dry out within two months, except I toss in one of those clay discs with the metal case to keep the tobacco fresh. At least, I do that with the tobaccos that *need* to be moist. Things like Stonehaven, McClellands Latakia Flake and others smoke better when dry. If they pass their optimum moisture point, I simply rehydrate.

Your tins will stay moist depending on how long it takes you to finish a tin. A standard flat metal tin will keep tobacco fresh about 3-6 weeks depending on the tin. McClellands with the plastic top will last a little longer. Again, it depends on how moist you like your 'baccy. And you can always revive tobacco that goes too dry. ALMOST always. I think most blends also have a point of no return but that's usually when it gets to the point where it becomes tinder and dissolves in your hand.

At least 5 tins open at any time, but I try not to have more than 8 open.

Longer term and/or larger quantity - use mason jars.

Short (month or two) term the tin is usually OK. Screw type tins (Escudo) close up pretty good. Square/odd shaped tins need some help. I put a double layer of aluminum foil over the open tin, then jam the lid down. This seals it but good. (This tip came from Greg Pease, thats Mr. GL Pease himself). Then I toss the tin into a ziplock baggie for good measure.

Tins don't last too long around here

Oh I think it will take a few weeks to go through 5 tins, especially when I have a tin of 1792 to smoke! Got it simply based on others revulsion of it!

Re: How Many Open Tins?

Let's see...

1 Frog Morton on the Town
1 Ashton Winding Road
1 Ashton Artisan's Blend
A couple of other blends in jars.

And next time I smoke (maybe tonight) I'll have an open tin of Sweet Vanilla Honeydew... I've been looking forward to trying it for a long time.
