Re: 100 degree heat index in the shade
Are you guys mostly complaining about the hot weather, or that the hot weather has a significant impact on the ability to draw out a cool smoke?
I will admit that pipe smoking in the hot weather tends to have a less relaxing effect, but the same goes for smoking cigarettes in the heat, too, in my experience. Maybe I'm asking a dumb question with an obvious answer. But, it seems like you guys are saying that smoking pipes in the summer climate is like the end of the world. No offense.Perhaps there are tobaccos more suited for hotter weather, and if so, what would those tobaccos be? Burley blends? I recall another piper on here talking about how he would smoke PA or Carter Hall all day long while doing his roofing job. Since being on a roof all day can get mighty hot, if the situation was really that bad, I'm sure he would have put the pipe down. |

Re: 100 degree heat index in the shade
In New Orleans complaining about the heat (humidity) of Summer is common place. The trade off of coarse is the wonderful winters and springtime. I have been to many hot countries and I think Greece has it right. What we should do here is a Siesta and sleep between the hours of 11 and 5pm and close up everything and just go to bed that way you could wake up later and at least go outside and do some activity at night. I have made some headway into the smoking thing and have picked very early mornings and very late evenings to go outside for my smoke. The exception being the one evening where I tried the Irish Flake when the humidity was in the 90 percent range at midnight. It was like I went to the health club in the steam room and tried to light my pipe. I nearly passed out that evening. The pipe does tend to get hotter as the evaporation of moisture is just not what it should be in these conditions. I have some thick walled pipes that are better suited for this situation and I have been turning to them as well as lighter blends. I have not yet tried the ice for the feet or pants (Wigglybottom) but it may be next on my list.
