Re: Newbie Sampler Bomb!
Very cool Charlie.
Big Thumbs Up!!! Now is a good a time as any to mention that I am working on something right up this alley. Using myself as an example. I was a Cigar Smoker and adored the incredible much more exquisite and taste-bud tantalizing flavor of Cigars over lesser cared for tobacco products. Not too difficult obviously. Pipes though, for me, were never part of the equation. I didnt look at 'em. Didnt think about 'em. Never even considered them as an option. Until one day in my B&M I kept going with all my pipe questions and ended up buying one. After tasting Pipe Tobacco I was COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY by the further additional Exquisite and Wonderful taste of it. Just blown away. The biggest part of the Blown Away stuff came from me completely not even considering pipes as an option. Never even entered my mind. Thats what blew my mind. That I never would have even given myself the chance to try pipes had it not been for a few chance circumstantial experience at my B&M. I could very easily now, still, not have tried it. So! I am evaluating a process of pipe bombing that includes not just Tobacco Samplers but also an actual pipe itself. I have found some somewhat acceptable pipes that you can buy in bulk at under $1.50 a pop. Very cheap. When you think about it, the average Cigar Bomb EASILY goes over $10 in cost. Average stick costing what....$3?? And 3 sticks on average in a bomb - easily has a total cost of $10 or more. Many cigar bombs actually go WAY over that dollar figure. 1 Cheap Pipe - $1.50 Several Tobacco's (good variety) samplers - $1 Total cost plus postage - $3.50 give or take. Cost wise its very possible to throw in a pipe and send it to a non pipe smokers way and allow them to fully experience what this pipe smoking thing is all about. I was soliciting feedback from several of the more experienced Puffer fishes and many commented on the cheap pipe likely being a major factor in this persons evaluation of pipes. If its poor quality, this person will have a bad experience. Although they are completely correct to an extent, unfortunately the cost is a major factor in such a program actually being used by people like us. There are mini wood and cob pipes that sell in bulk for under $2 a pop. It would be nice to have better pipes but the economics dont lend themselves too well for anything of higher quality. I still think it would provide someone who can appreciate the wonderful taste of some highly cared for tobacco a good idea of what pipe smoking is all about. And then, just maybe, they will actually pick it up. I dont think it will have a very high success rate. Maybe 1 in 15 or so will be converted. There are still major obstacles to overcome with pipe smoking. It being seen as an old stodgy method of tobacco consumption. Some people though, will be able to overcome the social pressures and join our ranks. |

Re: Newbie Sampler Bomb!
yes i agree, in my sampler bomb there are 13 samples . some good tobacco samples some local house blend samples, a missourri meerschaum corncob pipe and a czech tool.
i just got lucky and found a cigar smoker that admitted to being interested in pipe smoking. i am new to cigars and have been very fortunate to recieve several cigar bombs from great botl's. i thought i would try to do my part to send out some love too. i can't afford cigar bombs at this time and i still had a lot of pipe tobacco sitting around, so no brainer. p.s. no, i'm not quitting the pipe for cigars. i'm now enjoying both!

Re: Newbie Sampler Bomb!
Sounds great -- and there indeed could be converts. I believe pipe-smoking is not only less, uh, offensive when out in public, but some folks downright enjoy the aroma ('course, it usually reminds them of their grampaw!).
New to pipes, but I too already have enough to make up a coupla nifty samplers (all Boston house blends). So: thanks to the OP for getting things started... Sorry I will have to keep posting to buck up to 30 (slow going if I try to be somewhat less than inane). |

I was sitten in outside waiting, smokin, and reading. A lady from my church saw me, and came up and hugged and thanked me because my pipe reminded her of her late father. One of those sort of cool, but I don't really know how to handle this moments. ![]()

Re: Newbie Sampler Bomb!
The more I check out this forum, the more I like it! There are a lot of nice people and I love the thought of sending stuff and receiving it to identify it and all that.
I am just getting into cigars and I have to say, to echo someone else's earlier sentiment, there does not seem to be a lot of samplers for a newb that cost less than $25 or so (but there are a ton of sites I have been checking out to try to find some stuff). So far in my collection, I have a handful of cigars but am going to try to build it up as soon as I can ! |

Re: Newbie Sampler Bomb!
Oh, for *cigars* there are all *kinds* of cheap-o samplers (here is a handy link for daily deals: Pipes: Cigars Daily Deals and another: BEST CIGAR BARGAINS)
It is *pipe tobacco* that has a dearth of reasonable and varied samplers, hence the importance of pipe bombs and trades (yep--still buckin' for that thirtieth post I am!) |

Wow, I have shown myself for the complete newb I am. I appreciate the info on the cigars! I do enjoy a good pipe once in a while, it has just been a few years (since my grandfather passed), as we used to talk for hours and puff away. |
