Wow! My sister is worthless and yours is buying you a dunhill.

I'd go AJ's Va/per but go with what ever your favorite of the list is. Be sure to post pics when you get it.

Honestly, whatever tobacco you smoke for the 1st time in your Dunhill will taste sweeter than the sweetest pie you ever had.
Whatever is your favorite - smoke that.

Is Dunhill like the pipes of all pipes?

Yeaaaaaah,
AJ's VaPer would also be my choice. I like the combination of Virginia/Perique, and Russ is one of the best
tobacco blender. But I would choose the tobacco that is most precious for me.

The AJ's VAper is a good one for breaking in new pipes. But whatever you choose, prepare to be mildly disappointed until the pipe is broken in. Dunhills don't magically smoke great right outta the box just because they're Dunhills. They need break in time just like anything else.

But sheesh - what a great gift! Is your sister married?

Thats definitely not a rule of thumb.
I know a bunch of people that would disagree and also say that some of their best smoke was in their Dunhills first 30 bowls.

In the end though, all pipes are unique and have their own individual characteristics, so ya never know. It could take some time as dmkerr says or it could smoke like perfection the minute you light 'er up.

Dunhill is a top quality pipe with a great history and probably the most recognized name in pipes. There are a number of top quality makers so "the pipe of all pipes" is subjective.

I agree, I don't own a Dunhill but maybe someday. Lots of great makers out there

Mixture 79. Not!!! I see you have IRC Gourmet English, which I have and like. It burns down to a fine ash if you treat it properly. If it's one of your top favorites then there ya go.

Well, you just trumped my buy today. a Dunhill is nothing compared to my lowly lil Savinelli standing... I See Your Schwartz is Bigger Than Mine...impressive, most impressive.

I like 5 brothers...I like Irish flake, but can't decide between them, so you should smoke the 5 Irish brothers mixture.

Yeah thought so. I was just asking because I've been reading around for a while now and it seems to be the pipe that everyone wants. But I know its a matter of opinion.

I can't imagine how that could be unless the emotional high of smoking a Dunhill overcame the actual taste. All pipes need a degree of cake to smoke well, to reduce the heat if nothing else. Physics. That's not to say new pipes smoke poorly - it's just not their optimal time.

That said, some pipes smoke better sooner (develop a cake faster) than others. I've not seen or heard of Dunhills behaving this way but as you said, ya never know! I do have a Boswell that smoked pretty well right away but it still improved as it caked.

I would smoke your favorite tobacco, even if captain black is your fav, then smoke it. Good luck with that pipe!

Enjoyment is the key.
