Wind
I'm on the coast in texas for the summer, and its windy here all the time. Any tips on lighting/smoking in windy areas? even with covering the bowl it still seems to burn hot, and way faster than normal.

Re: Wind
Pipe and wind just sux. A little of a breeze can really damage a pipe, they say. Dunno personally since I never smoked a new one outdoors. Every serious pipe guy or pipe merchant sez, however, never smoke one in any kind of breeze unless/until it's well caked to prevent burning out the briar.
There is always the old pipe cap for a pipe that is outdoor-ready (broken in). I hate smoking in the wind - I like to see the smoke. ![]()

Re: Wind
Really?!? I had no idea... I thought those caps were just for keeping ash from flying around. I smoke outside all the time...

Re: Wind
The wind caps work pretty well I use them when im out side. Plus there only like 3 dollars.

Re: Wind
Not sure I'd insure a $2000 S. Bang blowfish with a $2 windcap on a breezy day but.... who knows?
The whole windcap idea as burnout protection seems weird to me because you can't actually prove it works - you can only infer it failed. If you haven't already, you really oughta cake that pipe up haff-a$$ed decent before letting it face even a light breeze, "they" say.

Re: Wind
I'm starting to fall for the romanticism of the way the old codgers do things, that is: pay no attention to any pipe advice, whatsoever, and remain oblivious until the day your pipe explodes, and then go buy another one, and repeat that cycle for the rest of your life.
I ordered a couple of cheapo estates, and I'm thinking of putting them through situations, such as, smoking in the wind, and what not, and observe how the pipes handle it. No mercy...put those briars through hell: the noble codger way. |

Re: Wind
Shoot, my main time to smoke my pipe is in the truck on the way to and from work, with the windows down, all four of them at least 2inches, and it gets a bit breezy in there, I just try to keep the pipe below the window when I don’t have it in my mouth. My disclaimer, the pipes I smoke in the truck are the Rough Briars that cost very little, however, I have noticed no change in the way they smoke, or at least no negative change anyway. I assume the changing that I am noticing, good change is from the cake that I am building, however, I have done this since new.

Re: Wind
Windpipes are a crock of crap. I have used one many times and it didn't do a damn thing. the wind just went into the holes on top and made it burn hot and come with a sulfur taste. Not only that, but it is f-in hard to remove the cap to light then place it back on. I've tried lighting through the cap;no go on that idea.
If you're going to smoke outside, just smoke outside. Grab a cheap pipe and go at it. I have an estate Garbow that I smoke outside with Granger, often. Works fine. Now it is caked up, but it wasn't before. Granger is a great tobacco. Wind blows on it and it still taste good, and sometimes better then when cool. Caps are a waste of metal and money. You'd be better off collecting a bunch of caps and melting them down and selling them to a metal yard for cash. lol!

Re: Wind
"The way of Noble Codger" should be a badge earned after destroying your first pipe.

Re: Wind
Sine summer has arrived I have been smoking more out by the pool or on my floating lounge chair with a cold beverage
sometimes wind comes into the picture.I smoke from a well caked and broken in Stanwell....my "workhorse pipe " and my best smoker...Imagine that! Fact is, smoke a flake or a coarsly rubbed out tobacco...tends to burn cooler and slower. works for me! Maboman |

Re: Wind
It seems like I have less problems smoking a thick wall or a rusticated pipe in my opened garage where I normally smoke. The Savinelli 315EX & 320EX seems to smoke the best for me. The Stanwell smooth bulldog seems to do OK also. The thin wall smooth pipes are the worst for me as they tend to burn hot like the Peterson Zulu or Comoy billiard. Like someone else said, if it burns up, go get another one.

Re: Wind
Thanks for the advice everyone.
I'm not from Texas, I'm actually from the northeast just here working for the summer. For the summer I'm bouncing between Houston, and Galveston |

Re: Wind
Welcome.
Another useful trick is to use the palm of your hand. You can pretty much cover up the bowl 100% or less and eliminate most of the ill wind effects. Getting that cake on though is obviously the most sure fire method. |
