No doubt about J. Brett "being" Sherlock Holmes. No one will ever beat his dramatic, over the top, interpretations... he smokes the dark, bent, churchwarden in many episodes.

Daniel Day Lewis could be a nice Holmes, yes, but I still have some faith in Downey Jr., despite the movie seeming to be all explosions.

Well, sometimes they do go over the top with sex and violence scenes in trailers to make the movie seem like more of an action movie than it actually is. I guess I would take a wait and see on this since both Downwey Jr. and Guy Richie are good at what they do. I have a feeling someone seeing the trailer based on the trailer alone...will be disappointed.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

FWIW, I think the pop-culture Sherlock Holmes is very different from the original Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes.

In the stories, he was a bachelor (when it wasn't socially acceptable to be one of his age), who was dirty and slobby and didn't know how to take care of himself. He used heroin, smoked, drank, and womanized (a bit, at least). He was also a genius.

He was not a tall, classy, reserved British gent.

So while they added in a bunch of explosions & such, the trailer might not be totally off the mark from the original character. I'm reserving judgment.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

As long as they don't portray Watson as a bumbling fool, I'll be willing to give them a lot of lee way.

Couldn't all of those words be used to describe Downey Jr. 15 years ago? From that description you could certainly picture Holmes waking up drunk in some kid's room in a house down the street.

Gut Richie tends to make cerebral action movies with a heavy dose of black comedy. All the main actors tend to make movies that are at least interesting. I do not see this being a bad movie. They are trying to do what Batman Begins and Casino Royale did few years ago ...give a fresh start for an old franchise. Some people may prefer the old BBC/PBS shows to the movie version. I just don't think different will mean bad.

He did not use heroin, he used Cocaine and sometimes morphine, but not excessively.

Sherlock was uninterested in things that did not pertain to work. The only woman he was interested in was the one from "Scandal in Bohemia" but only because she beat him.

Smoking was a postively gentlemanly thing to do in that time.

He definitly was exccentric, but usually only in the presence of his close friend.

Watson refers in a one of the short stories that he saw Holmes drop the Reserved Veneer that he normally showed to the public and revealed the excitement that the case brought to him.

Holmes definitly was not a womanizer. That is 100% hollywood gotta get sex into it crap.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

As a big fan of the original stories, and the BBC adaptations of the stories, I don't think I will view the upcoming movie as a true "Sherlock" story.
That doesn't mean it may not be a good movie.

You should clarify that by beating him you meant outwitted him in that case. Otherwise they're going to start saying that SH was a masochist. She was Irene Adler, and to Sherlock Holmes she was always The Woman.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

Glad I searched before posting.

What I am curious about is the general social effect on pipe smoking that the movie will have, if any.

I imagine it will give pipe smoking a small bump in popularity and inspire a few more people to light up.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

The books gave a very clear and specific physical description of Mr. Molmes, and Downey doesn't even come close. Basil Rathbone perfectly fit that description and was also the actor to introduce the calabash as the Holmes pipe. In the books, Mr. Holmes' pipe was once described by Dr. Watson as a "greasy clay pipe".

One can assume that the pipe was described as "greasy" due to years of constant handling staining the clay. Some have postulated that this was a description of a meerschaum pipe, but I seriously doubt this was the case.

This movie simply doesn't make the grade for me as a Holmes film and I, for one, will not be watching it.
