Sherlock Holmes

YouTube - Sherlock Holmes - Official Trailer [HD]

This is the trailer to Sherlock Holmes staring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

I recall discussion about this movie in a thread on the novels, and someone wondered if Holmes would sport a pipe, as the two are almost synonymous together.

Well, he does indeed have a pipe in the film, and it isn't a calabash, least not in the trailer. Its a relatively small pipe, too!

As for how I feel about the movie, well, I feel like they are trying to make Holmes into an action star. As someone who has never read the novels, nor seen any Holmes movies--short of The Great Mouse Detective, which is Holmesish--I don't like the way they are taking the character.

I love Downey, and it is still too early to judge, but based off the trailer, this is another run of the mill action picture with Characters based off of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works.

Granted Jude Law looks to be an awesome Watson, but I do not know about Downey in the role of Holmes.

What do you guys think?

and yes, this deffintly belongs here as Holmes is a piper and well...

Re: Sherlock Holmes

this appears to be based on the Sherlock Holmes novels in the same way as the Bourne Identity was based off of the Bourne Novels... in name only.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

Holmes never smokes a calabash in any of the novels or stories. That was an invention of the actors, because it hung well in the jaw and "read" well on film. In fact, in the text Holmes preferred strong and harsh tobacco, so a 'bash would've been his last choice.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

From what I remember, Holmes is supposed to be an ego-maniac and a dope-shooter, but otherwise, a somewhat classy guy. This movie trailer makes him look like a total sleazebag, but I guess that's what lots of people think is "cool", nowadays.

The director of this movie is Guy Ritchie who makes all those gangster movies, and also known for being Madonna's ex-husband. He is known for treating the audience to copious amounts of low-brow depravity, so I can't imagine that he is going to do anything decent with the Holmes character.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

There are very few actors I can think of that would be a good Holmes. He is tall, Aloof, very classy and kind, not depraved at all. Holmes let many people off of their crimes if they were propperly repentant, and no one was hurt.

Why do strong harsh tobaccos not go well with a calabash pipe?

Also, I recently began reading Sherlock Holmes, and was excited about the movie... until I saw the trailer.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

Amazon Link to Sherlock Holmes In my opinion the Granada Television version of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett is the ultimate portrail of him. If you love Sherlock, these are the ones to see. (these were on pbs too)

And he smokes a cool churchwarden in the first two episodes that I am going to post screen caps of before too long.... I would love to have a "sherlock" churchwarden.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

I am not sure I would classify Holme's as classy. As I recall he used a shoe to store tobacco and would go on binges that would last days.

In fact I would say that Holmes was considered odd at best, probably more like strange or abnormal by the general population.

I think that he was a bit reserved like was the custom of most in the books.

I am not very pleased to see this movie going this direction. Although Holmes was a boxer and quite athletic, this doesn't feel at all like the Holmes I love to read.

Liam Neeson, unfortunately, does not project intellectual brilliance, I think. He projects some sort of befuddled moral grandeur that finally resolves into action, yes. But to embody the quirky Holmesian genius, I don't know... I may be wrong... But I would go with Daniel Day Lewis among the current crop of possible actors who could be conceivably cast as Holmes.

Owing to gourd calabashes unique construction, they provide the smoothest and coolest smoke of any pipe. So, they would take too much edge/teeth off of a tobacco that's harsh, defeating the smoker's preference. Like a sailor who prefers tossing and choppy seas, choosing submarine duty.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

yes... you'er right. Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately he is no longer with us- the actor passed away some time ago. The only thing you can do now is watch Poirot with David Suchet to get a similar feel, and a similar grade of acting.
