Cleaning a meer?

I have a couple and regularly run a cleaner through them and occassionally swab with alcohol on a cotton ball. I know you do not really want alot of cake in them. Just wondering is a light sanding inside the bowl lie with a green pad would be recomended or not. I would think that having the inside of he bowl clean would allow it to absorb the tobaco and color better.

Any thoughts or experince?

No cake at all in a meer, it may crack the bowl. Don't get alcohol on the bowl, only use on the mouthpiece (it will stain or eat away the wax). Just use a soft cloth or tissue and wipe out the inside of the (cool) bowl to get the ash/crud out and prevent a cake. Meerschaum is soft stuff, don't get anything abrasive near it!

Every few smokes I loop a bristle pipe cleaner and gently rub off accumulated gom without ever getting to bedrock. The chambers in mine stay black and essentially uncaked.

This is how mine is now.

I too take my normal pipe cleaner after running it through the stem and double it over and run it around the bowl a few times. Helps keep it clean enough and keeps a cake from building.
