How long will a sealed container stay fresh?

I'm speaking of the plastic Middleton ones that PA and CH come in. They have a very tight seal and are shrink wrapped as well. I've never been much of a hoarder, but with prices going up, and Florida tacking on a new 60% tax starting on July 1st, I stashed 6 of the 14 oz. tubs, and am considering some more.

I don't want to put back 20 of them only to find that by the time I get to the last 10, they're dried out.

I've had a few tubs with 2-3 years on them that were perfectly OK once opened. Even if you found the tobacco has dried out some, you can always re-hydrate it. I've done this with tobacco I came across from my father-in-law that was purchased in the late '60's. It wasn't spectacular, but it was smokeable.

....better to have dried out 'bacy than none at all if a ban ever comes along....

If the tub and cap/lid stay in perfect condition, I've "read" that it can keep the tobacco fresh for many years. Even if smoking out of it now and again, it will keep the tobacco in good shape for a couple of years.

OK, I'll risk it. I called Middleton and couldn't get a definitive answer, but knowing that well cared for cigars have made it 7 years in my humidor without ill effects, I'm sure a sealed container of burley will do fine too.

I ordered 4 more tubs tonight and will add 4-5 a week until I feel I've got a tidy pile.

They'll be fine Kev.

Just be sure to inspect the tubs well all over for cracks. If any of the tubs are damaged just transfer the tobacco to mason type jars.

Kevin, I don't doubt that more tax increases are coming in Florida, but I believe that the only one currently in the offing is the recently approved $1 tax hike on cigarettes. The press reports on that piece of legislation specify that it is limited to cigarettes and should not affect cigar or pipe tobaccos. Did I get that right, or do you know something I don't? (I'm busy stocking up anyway.)

I did a little more snooping this morning and what I found seems to be focused on cigarettes. I was referring to legislative proposals that may not have made it to the final draft. The legislation I initially saw would increase...

  • Cigarettes by $1 a pack
  • Cigars over a certain weight by $1 a stick
  • All other tobaccos by 60% of the wholesale price
...and Florida made cigars were to be exempt.

I certainly hope they negotiated out the cigars/other tobacco portions of the bill. We'll know for sure in a few days.

Re: How long will a sealed container stay fresh?

Thanks for info, Kev. Good job of unearthing that information. By all means, keep us Florida-based forum members informed. If those proposals made it through, it shows they took a lot of care to ensure that this package came in under the radar, particularly if it comes into effect in just two days! What I read in the press is that the Gov. signed a tax increase for cigs only. They even went on with their usual mantra about it being "for the children" and to keep cigarettes away from kids, etc. No mention of cigars or pipe tobacco. Does this include internet sales as well???

Nothing wrong with stockpiling!

I've stockpiled many pounds of Black n Gold in large mason jars in a cool, dark place. Other things too but we won't go into that... hehe

Kev,

I'd say if you keep them shrink-wrapped and in a cool dark place they'll last for YEARS if unmolested. Screw the gov't and stockpile now!
