Relighting/saving a bowl?

Anyone ever sit down a bowl and come back to it later? I was interupted during a recent smoke and dumped the remainder. After I was thinking I wonder how it would have been relighting later?

I know this is not advisable for cigars, but what about pipes?

There are actually tobaccos I relight later on purpose. One of my favorite blends, Harkness Tower from the Owl Shop is like that. I will smoke half the bowl, put the pipe down and come back to it a few hours later. There is a an added sweetness to it that kicks. I think they call it the Delayed Enjoyment Technique.

But HT is a Balken blend. I have tried others and it feels like I am smoking ashtray. That is with some but not all Virginians, and some OTCs like Prince Albert.

I do it all the time. It's commonly referred to at "DGT" or Delayed Gratification Technique. A HUGE advantage over cigars.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

I always seem to have something on the go and quite often have to leave a pipe for a while. If there's a fair bit of ash on top I'll break it up and dump it then relight. Sometimes the first few puffs will be kind of ashy tasting, but the rest of the bowl usually burns well.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

It helps to sop out moisture (using a pipe cleaner, of course) before you rest the partial bowl. Avoids the stanky smell after a few hours of sitting around.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

I have returned to more than one pipe hours or even a day later to find a better smoke than I left behind. What 'puffs said about a pre-sopping before leaving the pipe.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

I often use the DGT with coarsely folded bowls of FVF, returning to it hours later, or even the next day. I have never had a bowl go sour like a cigar will. I recommend the method.

Peace.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

I have no problem relighting a bowl I didn't finish earlier. Usually happens when the wife and I are out and about and I leave the pipe in the truck while we're in non-smoking establishments. I'll also finish a bowl in the morning that I didn't finish the night before. As was mentioned, I'll let it sit with a pipe cleaner in it to avoid excess moisture retention.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

I have heard a legend whispered amongst the denizens of my local B&M.
They speak of a great man, who takes his pipe, loads up a bowl, lights a match, chars up the top layer nice and crispy like...takes one puff - and then - he sets the bowl down to be smoked the next day.
This man does this for all of his bowls, all the time & from what I hear, he really enjoys it.

Re: Relighting/saving a bowl?

A thought on relighting -

If you leave a half-smoked pipe in the car overnight, and if the windows are rolled up, the car REALLY stinks the next day.

I do this all the time. Sometimes at night I cannot finish a pipe. I put it down and relight it the next day.
I would agree with others, often it takes better on the relight.

That man must have steel willpower to light a bowl, puff on it just once, and then set it down. I too shall speak of such a great man. But I shall not be able to emulate him.
