Navy blends

I've been really digging both S&G's navy flake and MacB's Plumcake. However, I've been keeping both in a cob. Are these safe to smoke in a pipe I dedicate to english? They have latakia so I don't want to smoke them in any other pipes but would the casings color the tastes of other english blends?

At least with a cob you'll be keeping any ghost to a minimum........ or that's what they say

Re: Navy blends

I just finished off a tin of navy flake and have come to this conclusion. Anything Samuel Gawith makes must be good. I have tried just about all of them now and that navy is right up there with best brown imo.

You'd probably be fine, except for the plumcake. Personally I don't really mind mixing things up in my pipes, as long as it's not an aromatic.

Nah. Those won't ghost your english pipes. What will probably happen though, is your english ghost will flavor the navy flake for at least one bowl. I smoke macb navy a good deal and I don't ever taste it when I follow it up with Ashton's Artisan blend - a pretty full english. The other way round though is another deal. I'll be smoking the navy and get a brief blast of latakia. That doesn't even seem to last for the entire bowl though. I've only been smoking a few months, but I find that the englishes will put more of their stamp on other stuff you're smoking more often.

I guess if you smoked peaches and cream or something a whole lot, then put an english in there you may have problems, but the great flakes you mention shouldn't give you too much a problem.

If for some reason you taste it a little in your english, just keep puffin...it'll clear out soon enough and you'll know better next time. It all depends on how much of a purist you want to be. It's a great excuse to buy more pipes.

Re: Navy blends

as stated above, my biggest concern if I were encountered with that scenario. The latakia in the english, might show through your other blends. MacB's Navy I believe has latakia anyhow, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem: you should just get a bigger blast of smokiness than otherwise.
