My impression, accurate or erroneous as it may be, is that aromatics usually get mixed reviews, while most Virginia blends tend to get higher ones. Just try to identify reviewers whose opinions and judgement you can relate to. For example, my top preference is not aromatics, but there are some that I like. These I found by forcing myself out of the category rut. Some aros I've never liked - at all - and will never try again. Others, like Butternut Burley, McB Navy Flake, W.O. Larsen's Old Fashioned, and McC Mocha Black I smoke fairly frequently. Doing so helps me avoid falling into a rut with the English/Balkan blends that are my mainstay. These nice, relaxing aros provide me with some variety and change. And none of them give me tongue bite.
Well to say I'm not an aromatic smoker would be false. I just dislike a badly done aromatic. I really like Firedance flake and Erinmore flake along with the interesting flavour of 1792 flake. I tried SG Celtic Talisman but I just couldn't resign myself to the flavour and the room note was quite disgusting. With C&D Blockade Runner I will enter into the foray of rum aromatics so I'm excited to give it a try.

Well said - that's the spirit! We must always remember that some times (not all the time certainly) our tastes depend on things like our body chemistry. Some opine that bodchem affects issues like tongue bite and distaste for certain aromas. Some individuals may even be allergic to some types of tobacco leaf. So, even though you can't go out and sample every conceivable blend out there from the sheer multitudinous variety of them, you can certainly do some well-guided and critical study of some of them - one at a time. It is precisely at that point were the usefulness of forums like this comes in, as long as we keep in mind that there will always be ingrained differences among smokers in things like taste, tolerance, etc.
