Rust in Tin

I just finished off the last of my FVF, removed the paper wrapping from the tin, and discovered several large rust areas. Now, since I was planning on stockpiling some tins of various tobaccos rather than just going the bulk in mason jars route, this concerns me. Is rust in the tin something I should worry about? I have no idea if the rust was there before opening; I didn't look, but I can't imagine this much rust developing in just the three weeks I've had the tin. Anyone have any experience with this or concerns?

Don't worry about it. Rust is iron oxide, the key part being "oxide" i.e. oxygen. A sealed tin will run out of O2 in a few months with the aging microbes and the rusting should stop. I opened a 10 year old Veermaster and it was rusty in places, other one year FVF tins showed some rust in that short time too. Now if the seal pops, then you have a problem.

Re: Rust in Tin

I've had a couple tins with rust spots in them, with on FVF tin bottom nearly completely rusted inside. I transferred to a small jar and tossed the tin. It didn't seem to affect the taste however.

Re: Rust in Tin

Seems like a SG thing. I think I've seen rust in 75% of my SG tins, but never any problem with the baccy.

Good point! I guess if it's not on the outside and the seal isn't popped, it's no big deal.

Re: Rust in Tin

Hmmm...I have not found one with rust upon opening, but have noticed the tins will rust once opened especially if the baccy is still moist.

Re: Rust in Tin

A problem with my SG and Esoterica tins is that I've received several of them already "popped." Just check all your tins upon receiving them. Then, as the other poster said, just transfer the contents to a jar if need be.

Re: Rust in Tin

I notice that Macbaren tins have the same problems. i.e. Plumcake, HH mature virginia...

The tins will start to rust once opened.

So far I have not found any rusting with the Navy flake tins yet.

Re: Rust in Tin

Hmm... SG, ET and McB products all come mostly in rectangular tins. I detect a pattern here with popped tins and rust...

MacBitten comes in an equal number of round tins (VA #1, Vanilla Cream ribbon, etc). I think it has more to do with the material used for the tin, steel vs aluminum or whatever GLP and C&D use?

Well, that screws up my theory... I just got 6 tins of Penzance today. Two of them were popped. Another theory: must be the heat in those UPS trucks (I live in South Flori-duh). It won't hold either, if similar orders delivered in more temperate climates are also found to be arriving with a percentage of them popped.

I've gotten five tins of Penzance in the past couple weeks, as well as some SG tins, & none of them were popped.......it has been pretty cold up here in Southern-Canada though.
