I started in 1982 and stopped in '95. Just picked it back up about a year ago. I discovered that not only are a lot of blends out of production or unavailable that used to be as scarce as dust (Sobranies, Dunhills, 3 Nuns, St Bruno), but there are a ton of new ones. This is the Golden Age of Pipe Smoking, in my opinion.

A few months back I would have said Frog Morton, but the more burley or virginia blends I try, the less I'm enjoying English tobaccos. Right now it's a tie for me. H&H Anni Kake and their Classic Burley Kake. I'm hooked on both these big time! In fact, I've enjoyed every single blend from H&H I've tried so far.

Dunhill EMP, just bought some more. Squadron Leader probably being 2nd and Dunhill DeLuxe Navy Rolls being the 3rd. Previous favourite Balkan flake has dropped a little on the list, that's because I hate those SG's overthick flakes that are among decent ones.

I listed PA as my top choice already, and that remains true. If I had to list my top 5 (in order) based on what I'm smoking most often right now, they would be.....

1) PA
2) HoW's Bourbon Street (running out quickly)
3) SG's Firedance Flake (just ran out a few days ago)
4) MacBaren's Golden Extra
5) MacBaren's VA No. 1

I see Squadron Leader mentioned a lot. I'd probably list it in my top 5 but I don't have a bunch left so not smoking it very often. Same for Penzance.

1.McC's Grand Orientals: Smyrna No.1
2.Dunhill 965
3.McC's Blackwoods
4.McC's 2010
5.Tinderbox's Reserve 1928

I McClelland Virginias. Actually, I love almost ALL of the McClelland tobacco I've tried, with Frog Morton being the only one I wouldn't buy again, and even that one I still kinda liked.

Russ really knows his stuff! I agree with you. His Classic Burley Kake and AJ's Vaper are in my regular rotation and I could smoke Anni Kake and Louisiana Red regularly, too. He's really kicking ass on the Vaper blends right now.

I was not real impressed with anniversary kake at first but after sitting in a mason jar for a couple months, some magical yummy things happened.

my 5 fav's smoked this year are:
1. PS LNF
2. SG Brown Rope #4

4. ACP Curly Cut (internal factory sample tin i found on ebay from '97)
5. McConnells Scottish Cake

That's a definite. I feel about GLP blends the way you do about H&H. I seem to be in the distinct minority there. I've smoked about 8 different ones and each one was tough going. They've been banished to my cellar for some aging and I'll revisit them early next year.

i agree, there are only a couple GLP blends i like (same for C&D). i will note that i've only had the Va/Pers from H&H (and the Virginia Spice, which is a Va/Per + cigar leaf).
