Canadians: how much duty/taxes when ordering from the States?

Hi all,

I'm a pipe newbie starting out with a corncob. I'd like to order some tobacco from the US online shops. The price difference and selection is staggering. However, I'm wondering how much duty/taxes will be slapped on once it crosses the border. Would it be 100% ?

Fwiw, I was going to order some cornell and diehl.

I'm not an expert on shipping pipe tobacco, but I have had experience shipping cigars cross-border. My recommendation is to find a shop that is willing to declare the goods in such a way that you don't have to pay duty.

In regards to the price you'll pay in duties and taxes, for cigars it is well over 100%, but varies a lot depending on a variety of factors. A buddy of mine was charged $350 on a $50 purchase.

As for duties they are a mystery to me. I have never shipped pipe tobacco only cigars and I have been assessed duties any where from 750 $ to 0 $.

I tends to follow no regulation. I have shipped 4 boxes and it was opened with no duties and I got 10 cigars that were assessed 750 $ taxes.

Moral of the story its a crap shoot so be prepared for anything and make sure your confident in what your doing.

Also consider picking up at a US location and bringing it accross as part of your duty free allowance if you can it the safest way.

Check out this site. At the bottom under Miscellaneous is a tax calculator. Just punch in the quantities, shipping costs, your province, etc and it will tell you how much you'll be nicked if customs assesses you.
